I am trying to install programs such as minisafe, bbweather, etc, etc onto my new 8700 but it won't seem to allow me to install them- it just beeps and tells me that no additional software designed for my handheld are found..

any ideas?

In the application loader screen, i also see that there's no system software (or seemingly any software) instaled on the device.

You need to install some OS software on your PC. Either use the one on your device or upgrade to .284 or .291 if you like.

yeah! bingo. just needed to upgrade my desktop software.
