Talking BES and Blackberry Pro - what's the diff?

Please Login to Remove!

I guess this is more of a rant than an actual request for technical knowledge. But . . .

I've installed 5 of what I thought were Blackberry Enterprise Servers only to discover that my present install and my previous install were, in fact, Blackberry Pro servers. The Blackberry web site makes quite a bit of hoopla about how much easier it is to install Pro over Enterprise. Well, boys, I don't see the difference - other than licensing maybe. It was just as aggravating installing Pro as it was to install Enterprise. In fact, the installation manual for Pro is identical to Enterprise. The installation manual still glosses over the "send as" rights setup - directing you to a Microsoft Article rather than laying out the mouse clicks. Installing on SBS 2003 is still very tricky because of the existing instance of SQL Express.

Blackberry Pro is NOT easy to install. The documetation is incomplete. Troubleshooting even the simplest problem requires a witch doctor. If Blackberry wanted to make the installation easier, they would create a script that would direct you or actually configure the conflaguration of rights you have to setup, and they would make the installation program aware of preinstalled SQL Express instances (like Backup Exec does).

Blackberry has a couple of bucks. I'm sure they can figure it out.

'nuff said.

Yes. Thanks. I guess I'm a pretty basic user. My clients are perfectly happy having their Outlook sync with their Blackberry. For the average small business, there really is no difference. I just got a little miffed about the easy part. Nothing easy about BES and Exchange. Thanks again!
