Question Purchased used BB9700 - de-register PIN question

Please Login to Remove!

Hi everyone!

I'm a newbie on posting.

I recently purchased a BB9700 on Ebay. Unfortunately, I did not come across the "Buying a Blackberry of Ebay" page prior to my purchase.

I'm quite confused about the automatic registration of the PIN/IMEI. I read in a number of posts that when you insert your SIM to a BB, your SIM automatically registers the PIN of your phone to your carrier. The thing is, the seller said she used the BB9700 once. I'm assuming she tried it for a week, didn't get the hang of it, went back to her old BB and decided to sell the new one. I was wondering if this means that the PIN/IMEI has already been registered to her carrier and that she needs to tell them to de-register the phone?

Would it be possible for me to just call the telco and ask them to de-register it for me since we share the same carrier (3)?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, your telco should remove the PIN from her BIS account if it is still registered. If the previous user re-registered another BlackBerry on their BIS account, it should have removed the PIN for the 9700.

But if it did not... call them. Explain you purchased the device used.

Thank you for the reply.

Someone said in another forum that:
"as soon as the Blackberry network detects a new SIM card is being used in your phone it automatically dis-associates itself from any previous BIS account, leaving it ready to be registered as a new user."

Just hope things go smoothly(for me) when I get the 9700.

Thanks again.

I believe this is only issue if you are using the phone on a different carrier as the original owner, i.e. owner purchased a subsidized T-Mobile Bold and you buy this and plan to use on AT&T. Then you would need to call T-Mo to have them release the PIN so you can use on your carrier... Once again, I believe, but not positive.

Thats not correct.
If the PIN is regiestered to a BIS account, regardless of carrier, you would need it to be un-registered to use it.

That's good to know... Thanks for the clarification... One question regarding that then...

When someone inserts a new SIM into the phone, does that automatically register that SIM/BB PIN on that SIM's carrier? Or would you need to call the carrier before you can use BIS? I ask because I have been eyeballing some BB's on Craigslist since becoming a crack addict.

Thanks again.

No, the registration is not automatic. For example a new device, on a new BIS account, would need a manual registration on the BIS account.

Say for my existing BIS account -- if I get another BlackBerry device and move the SIM from one device to another, my BIS account should recognize it and de-register the old PIN from the BIS, and put the new PIN on the account. And, if not, you might need to do so manually by logging into the BIS account doing the Change PIN process.
