Welcome to BB Forums!

To use any of the data features on a BlackBerry you must have a BlackBerry Data Plan; the other Internet plans (T-Zones, Web&Apps) will do nothing on a BlackBerry.

What does dial up mean? Can you use the 8100 as a modem when connected to a PC? Yes; there are literally hundreds of threads on it.

Currently I have pda phone and I just use regular dial up to connect to internet and to get email. I can also set up dial up on my Nokia 6230 and surf the web at 3Kbps at no extra charge but using my minutes. I wonder if I can set up dial up connection on Pearl.

Yes you can, but you need a BlackBerry Data Plan first. Depending on your carrier, they may also have an additional charge for using the BB as a modem. I believe Verizon and Cingular have additional fees for using the BB as a modem.

The BB does not use "dial up" to get e-mail.

So what exactly blackberry data plan does? In mobile windows I go to connections in setting, chose cellular line as a modem, type server's phone number, user name: [email address] and password: 123456 and I get connected at no charge. To my cellular provider it is a CSD phone call. Can I do the same on pearl?

You can not get free Internet Windows Mobile. If you are able to do so, you doing it illegally.

As the other poster said, yes, you do need the Blackberry data plan. Or you can get a plan that combines both voice and data in these plans.

dial up is free as a backup for at&t DSL and i pay for my minutes whenever i use dial up. so it's all legal. On my bill it shows as CSD call and i'm not being charge for it. I can do it on my both phones WM pda phone and nokia 6230(with different settings [email address], cingular1, 847-254-9271) I have no idea about BB os and its connection settings so i posted here to get some answers. $20 or more for data plan itself is too much when i can get sero voice plan for $30 with free unlimited data from sprint wich is also faster than cingular or tmobil.

The BB does not support CSD like the MDA ( I had that too ) you have to get the BB Data Plan to do anything like that.

Just to beat a dead horse (which apparently the original poster keeps trying to revive). No, you cannot do this without a BlackBerry Data plan.
