Default Water spilled all over my 8800... I want to dry it out.

Please Login to Remove!

Anyone know how to take it apart yet? These Blackberrys seem to be REALLY resistant to water damage. I literally submerged my 8700 under soda (on accident) for 3-4 seconds and no adverse effects. My 8800 didn't suffer any damage either. But to play it safe I'd like to take it apart and dry it out. That and fix those damn squeaky side rails. I took out the 4 torx screws but nothing seemed to budge and I didn't want to force anything.

I've never done it myself but a quick Google for "taking apart a blackberry" yielding a few sites and even one YouTube video. Searching the forums here for "taking apart" also pulled up a good bit. Good luck, -Pk

Thank you guys for the replies but they're useless (except maybe the rice one) Those links you posted provide instructions for Blackberry dissasembaly EXCEPT the 8800. No ones taken apart an 8800 yet. You can't just google "how to take apart a blackberry" and expect me to use that result. There's many different types of BBs. Thanks though...

Getting the soda (coke here in the south, we don't say soda) out of the keyboard seems to be the thing that will get you, just drying won't fix the inevitable. My 4 year old swears she didn't spill anything on my 8703e but the keyboard mysteriously got sticky when pressing the keys.

Modern electronics should all come with a label that says "No user serviceable parts inside", or provide you with a way to take them apart. After all you OWN the device, you should be able to do whatever you want with it.

Enough ranting... If you have taken the torx screws out and still can't get it apart, you are probably going to have to apply some nerve wrecking pressure to the sides with a jewelers screwdriver to get them apart. I wish you success, and please post the photos when you are done just in case my four year old comes back to me with my 8830 and says "I found your phone Daddy."hehehe

If you want to clean the inside, I recommend using isopropyl alcohol as a solvent for the soda. Water would be ill-advised.

Disassembly is going to be almost the exact same as the ones posted in the FAQ...

1. Open the back
2. Remove the Battery
3. Take out the SIM
4. Remove the two T5 Torq screws (The bottom and middle ones hold in the side rails
5. With finger nails, or some thin & stiff plastic, get between the side rails and the facia to prise them apart. A rule of thumb, do this at the bottom and middle. Don't do this from the top. You'll need to do this from the front and the back. You'll get a satisfying click when they separate & they will stay that way until you push them back.
6. Remove the side rails, holding from bottom and lift up. The rails are hooked over the front and back facia to hold them in place.
7. The rest is pretty simple, if the font and back haven't fallen off by now, then they will both be removed from the bottom lifting up to the top.
8. There is a fiddly joint between the front & back facias as they join at the top, the interlock can be separated, but it does take a little care.

If you'd like some pictures, then I can oblige.

Cheers,

Pete

You don't need to disassemble it to dry it out.

I dried mine, after shockingly finding myself up to my armpits in seawater at Pipeline, by pulling the battery and leaving it on the dash of my car for a few hours. Gotta cool it before powering up.

I did something very similar to a SLR camera lens. I put a hair dryer up to the front element for a while, making sure not to melt the surrounding plastic of course, and it worked quite nicely.
