Either one will be fine for 60 - 80 devices.
What is your intended growth? What is your budget?
If you already have a SQL server... then there's no reason not to use it.

Default re

2 years ago, they told me I should not expect more than 20 devices... I currently have 60++. So I can easily expect this to double in the next years.

We do have a sql server; but it is to be reinstalled in our new domain, so if it's better to use it, I would have to 'rush' this reinstallation. no big deal...

We where tinking about removing this server (sql) to move to oracle, but if I have a fairly good reason to keep it, we will...

some users are currently complaining about the time it takes to sync the 'read' status on the devices... will it help to isolate the database?

If you can afford it, go for SQL. But syncing the "Read" status (this is called "reconciliation" in BB terms) will probably not be faster. It is a background process that can take 15-20 minutes.
