Default which MS updates will kill mapi fuctionality (server 2008) ?

Please Login to Remove!

Yesterday I had to reboot some windows SBS server 2008x64. During the reboot, a ton of MS updates where installed.
After that, the BES mail store service refuses to start. There is a problem initializing mapi. BES is BESx 5.0.2.
I reinstalled mapi + CDO 1.2.1, and reregistered the cdo.dll

Is there anywhere a list of updates which kill mapi functionality ?

here is my hit llist on 2008 issues.

BAS wont open on 2008 R2
KB23927-BlackBerry Administration Service continually stops and restarts, after an operating system hotfix is applied

Update for Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 Edition (KB2534366)
"0xC000009A" error message when you try to install Windows 7 SP1 or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

change the SQL Server Browser from Disabled to Automatic after windows update ( yes it gets changed)

KB980232 (SMB updates)

its part of a bigger rollup pack (MS10-20).
Uninstall this update, reboot. BES wont work... Windows update again (SQL SP3 et all), reboot. BES will work.

BTW heres how you know you have the problem.
go to start->run cmd.exe
c:\> new view
SYSTEM ERROR 87 HAS OCCURRED

using 2008 Global catalogs?
KB17325-Issues with the BlackBerry Enterprise Server when using a Windows Server 2008 Global Catalog Server - NSPI Bind Limit exceeded

Unable to log on to BAS when running a mixed domain environment
KB18186-Unable to log in to the BlackBerry Administration Service web console when running a mixed Windows Server 2003 and 2008 domain controller environment

Default Re: which MS updates will kill mapi fuctionality (server 2008) ?

Solved it.... but it was not the windows update:
I first applied any other update I found, in the hope there is some superseeding update in the queue which fixes it again. But no.
I then remebered, I also installed "Windows Desktop Experience" on the server because I needed the media player features and dlls.
But the Desktop experience also installs the **** Windows Mail app - which in turn enables itself as the default mail application (but i is unable to handle mapi).

Now, you cant uninstall windows mail, unless you uninstall the desktop expierence, and there is no default application you can assign the mail protocol as an alternative availible.

open regedit:
under HLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Clients\Mail
you find a String "Default", which is set to "Windows Mail"
changed that to "ExchangeMAPI"

and voila, without a reboot, my BES is running again.

Maybe this helps somone else: be careful before installing Desktop expierence on a Windows Server.
