Default 8120 - USB seems to "shut off" when I attempt to connect to a PC

Please Login to Remove!

Operating system is XP, the PC is only 1.5 years old and the BB is about 7 months old.

When I connect it to the PC, neither the BB software nor XP recognizes there's something plugged into the USB port. I've tried reinstalling the software, the USB drivers, etc. The computer acts as if nothing's plugged in at all.

It does not seem to be a malfunctioning USB port. The PC has 5 USB ports all of which don't work with the BB. I have a separate USB mouse, however, that does work in all 5 ports.

Nor does it seem to be a bad cable. I bought a new cable and get the same behavior.

The bigger issue seems to be that the BB's USB port stops working after I try to connect it to a PC.

When I connect it to the PC, the BB's battery icon flickers to show the "charging" icon (the little lightning bolt next to the battery icon) and then it disappears right away.

After this happens, when I try to connect the BB to a wall charger or car charger, the charging icon never shows up and the battery never gets charged.

However if I do a hard reset (a.k.a. pulling the BB's battery out and putting the battery back in) the ability to charge the BB via the wall/car charger is restored.

Any ideas?

Check the battery. It should be flat. If there is a slight bluge, then it is bad. Just happened to my wife's BB.

Default USB "shut off"

I went this weekend to upgrade my 8100 to the 8110 with AT&T and had the same issues. My 8100 is fine. I went through 2 phones at the store and couldn't get the USB to work. Everyone I've spoken with is stumped???

I have a brand new Dell laptop Latitude, running XP, and installed all the new Desktop Software.

I'm sticking with my 8100 until I can get a clear answer on what to do!

1. Have you tried connecting to a laptop or another desktop that preferably does not have DM installed. If the laptop/desktop beeps or makes sound of recognizing the unit then your USB should be fine.
2. Have you tried changing the battery to see if that alleviates the problem
3. And lastly does the battery charge with the wall charger?

Lastly you can try to upgrade: Reset using JL_Cmdr and reload the OS - do this only if you are comfortable in upgrading your handheld's software!

1) In the presence of AT&T reps, we pulled the battery out of the phone and even tried a completely different Pearl - no luck.
2) These Pearl's were brand new, out of the box, and hadn't left the store. I upgraded the desktop manager software on my laptop before trying to connect them both. They did charge off a wall plug and off my USB cable in my car too, so it's only the laptop connection.
3) I returned them and went back to my old, trusty 8100, so I didn't get far enough to update the phones. I would assume since they are brand new, they are completely updated.

anything else?
