How exactly does it work on the phone? I have T-Mobile@Hotspot service and the router that they gave me. So does that mean that I can get "unlimited" calling no matter who I call so long as I connect it to the router?
Also How exactly does Wi-Fi work on the phone? What does it do? What can I do with it if its connect? Can someone give me details of what it does and its benefits.

Nope, no unlimited calling. The Wi-Fi gives you greater internet/data transfer speed but will not affect calls. So you can browse faster and possibly receive data quicker also, like email.

omegadan is absolutely right. Also, you can use your wifi to make calls. It *should* shouw up as UMA on your blackberry, however, your carrier will still be able to calculate your voice call usage.

You're absolutely incorrect. He said he has the @Home service so he can make unlimited UMA calls.

When you see the "UMA" status on the top right of your screen, your calls and data will be going over your WiFi service.

Alright um a few more questions, My current 8700 shows that I am constantly connected through "edge", so that means "UMA" is better than "edge"?

Also I have no data plan what so ever, so does that mean that I will get charged if I use Wi-Fi?

What's the fastest type of connection that T-Mobile offers for people on a Family Plan? I ask because I read someone that "EDGE" is better than "edge" and I want to get the best possible quality when I get the 8900.

8700 does not support UMA or WiFi for that matter.

lowercase edge means that although you're connected to the T-Mobile edge network, you do not have a blackberry data plan.

I wasn't aware that one could make calls over the wi-fi... interesting.

The crappy thing is that if you have access to Wi-Fi, you probably have a computer, so why use your blackberry at home to browse the web...

The network at work has me connected but the Wi-Fi sign is in grey. Dunno why that is because I entered the network key =/

Like stated before lower case "edge" is when the edge network is present but the BlackBerry data is not available. Which you would need the BlackBerry data package to get the uppercase "EDGE". Same goes with "gprs"/"GPRS" which is a slower data rate. "UMA" is a whole different story, that is when your connected to a network that would allow UMA calling through the internet. Which is @Home, that's what they came out with it for. When you are connected to your network you can make calls and it will not come out of your regular pool minutes. You data transfer (browsing/downloading, etc) will be faster as well because you'll be using your internet through your wireless router instead of the mobile network.

That's what UMA is, think of it as something similar to VOIP...same idea. And the reason why you are having a grey wi-fi signal is because either your either using a carrier other than TMo on your 8900 that doesn't support UMA or you have a 8900 that isn't a TMo branded.

WIFI is free internet no matter what.

You can use uma calling only if you do not have a prepaid plan AND you have your phone "feature enabled". T-mobile just changed the policy in October.

My BB 9000 connects to my Wi-Fi at home for faster browsing, but it can't connect to the Wi-Fi at work. Unfortunately I never browse at home with my BB because I have a laptop, so the place where it would really be useful is at at work, because internet use at work is restricted.

Apparently the UMA service is specific to T-Mobile?

Sounds good, though.

Is this the case with all phones working on other carriers networks? If so, it explains a big problem I'm having.

I have a Vodaphone branded phone, unlocked. I run on the Three network in Australia. Though the phone is unlocked, your explanation seems to fit.

I am wondering if I can wipe the original operator's software and install the Three software on the phone - this should solve my problem.
