serious issue, can't retrieve contact list
Please Login to Remove!
I got my bold today, activated it, I love it.
heres the issue:
my storm has a cracked screen. It still functions, but the screen is black, thats it. Verizon apparently doesnt offer contact-switching service anymore.
I tried to use the device manager but it doesnt acknowledge my phone being plugged in. I thought the software was bad so I uninstalled it to re-install. I un installed only to find that I dont have the software disc anymore.
I need to recover my contact list from my Storm1 without having to look at the screen. this contact list is absolutely critical.
any suggestions?

Do you have a backup?
Do you sync with Outlook?
If the answer is no to both, then I am sorry but it is most likely lost.
And if the data is that critical, maybe you need to start a regular back up program?

I didnt know anything about backup assistant untill today. Before I could just take it to the store and it wasnt an issue. Lesson learned, I have already downloaded and activated backup assistant to my new phone.
this sucks

Verizon does transfer you contacts for 10 dollars at their retail stores. If you are using a reseller I am not sure

Also you should be able to create a backup without the screen using Desktop Manager

Depends on why the screen is dead. The device might also be dead.
I guess the question is how do you now it still works?

True,
If it is plugged in and the PC detects the BB then it is not dead

1. computer does not detect the phone is plugged in. It has always been like this.
2. If I get lucky, I can hit the right number and speed dial my wife. I can recieve calls etc. everything works, i just cant see the screen.
3. Verizon has cancelled their service of transfering data. I was told today their machines were intermittenly erasing customers' data while transfering.
4. I activated my phone in a rush, did not backup data.
my only solutiong (it appears) is to have the screen repaired and simply write down all the contacts (150+)

If this has always been the case, either your USB port is bad on your phone, or you need to update your DM. are you on DM 4.6?

And if the USB is bad, you might be out of luck anyway.

it was a refurbished phone, my 3rd Storm. Since the day I got that particular one, the usb didnt read. I wasnt a big deal at the time because I wasnt syncing it with my computer.

Wow, indeed a tough lesson learned. It always seems like "it wasn't a big deal at the time" turns into a big deal now. We hear it quite often.

I'm not a technology enthusiast, when I got the phone it was way more than I needed. I honestly didnt even know about backing up data and connecting with the computer etc. Now I know, it wont happen again. I honestly wouldn't be upset if computers and cell phones never existed. I have to have the phone for work, I dont have facebook or any of that stuff.
anyway, thanks for your time and advice. So far the Bold has been great. Its like the Storm without a touchscreen. setup was easy, no issues, im rockin and rollin now.

Sorry that it couldn't have been better news and a better outcome for you.

For future reference, you can download the latest BlackBerry software for your pc direct from RIM for free. This is actually preferable to using what came on a disk as the disk is often older/outdated versions of the software. No telling how long ago RIM created those disks and what improved versions of the software have come out since then.

Hi, I am new to the forum but just for the record, I had everything transferred from my LG to my new BB Bold at Verizon with no glitches and they did it for free. Good luck.
