Default Cingular reps won't allow me data access!

Please Login to Remove!

After spending much time with them on the phone... going to supervisors and such... They told me they're "not allowed" to add the lines to my bill as indicated in the link below:

http://www.blackberryforums.com/viewtopic.php?p=20472

After exhausting my options with them -- I even offered to add-on and PAY for the Wireless Express package, or even the Media Unlimited package (which, by the way, is a rip off since I should get unlimited data through my BB Data package anyway)... but they told me that they're not allowed to add those features to blackberry units! One of the main reasons I bought this thing was to be able to use Instant Messenger!

I've tried all the settings possible (APN: isp.cingular, Username: [email address], Password: CINGULAR1... as well as the WAP version of that), but I still can't get Verichat or other data programs to work.

Any suggestions?

I am planning to go to the store and try this. The guys at the store seem cool, they were pretty friendly when I got my 7100 and they didn't have it yet so I let them play with it. I am hoping I get some good Karma in return.

Try testing alternate Cingular-AT&T settings:

Tools->TCP

APN: proxy
User:
(blank)
Pass: (blank)

See if this works.

Hi Mark,

I'm starting to wonder if those who are accessing a BES are having these problems or not?
Granted that Im on Nextel and yes my company has a 4.0 BES but I didnt have to do a thing to browse the web.
Granted I have not tried to use thise thing like a modem, that what I would look into next I guess, but so long as it works when I get my 7100g than I shouldnt complain

Seriosuly though, is there a difference where those with BES setup wont have these problems?? Or was I very lucky that I dont have these problems?

Thanks

Dave

After being tranferred from dept to dept... holding for hours... someone at Cingular who knew what they were doing was able to change the options on my account, add the lines regarding the data configuration for WIX... and then I just entered in the TCP settings:

APN: isp.cingular
Username: [email address]
Password: CINGULAR1

Powered off the unit, and restarted and.. BINGO! Verichat and the other programs work now.

Can you give us any clues as to whom or what department you spoke with? It would be good future reference if this problem occurs to know what dept to ask for.........god i hope it never happens

They'll probably transfer you all over the place no matter what... but the best luck I had was going to the Product Management Center (PMC). I believe their direct number is:

866-490-2666 (hours are 8am-11pm EST)

Tell them you've been transferred everywhere... and this is where you were told to go. That you need your account adjusted to get unlimited WIX (I think it's Wireless Internet Express) so you can get the data connect features that your Unlimited Blackberry plan is supposed to come with. I could be wrong about the details... but it's something like that. You may have to call back a few times until you get someone who knows what they're doing.

Nobody who's on a good BES, has these problems.

It's when you don't have BES and you are trying to get TCP/IP Internet Access without BES/MDS -- that you have lots of problems with Cingular. Hopefully, they will eventually make it easier.

I ran through the same hassle about 6 weeks ago. Instead of using the ISPDA setting I used the WAP version and it worked like a champ.

I spoke to a rep a little while ago who was willing to add those WIX line items to my bill, but he assured me if he did that I would be billed for the extra data at 1 cent per KB, or $10 per MB!! So I wasn't sure if I should do it or not, so I told him not to bother.

Is there anyone who has been using the isp.cingular APN long enough to get billed and can confirm I will not be billed for this data?

I just realized what my problem is. Whenever I enter the information in the "APN" field, and then I do a hard reset, when I check the TCP information again, it is blank.

If I get this all right, what I am reading is that Cingular will charge extra to IM? I thought all of the Internet, email etc was included in the much more expensive than T-Mobile's plan? Does anyone know if T-Mobile has this problem? I know the 7100t actually comes with IM but I wonder if there is an extra charge for that?

I didn't need to do a hard reset when I changed my settings. I just powered off.

It's unclear if Cingular bills extra for data features. From what I've read... Cingular doesn't charge extra (once the thing's setup right.) However, I have read that AT&T does charge extra. It's all very confusing.

I think I have figured everything out now. If I change the TCP settings and then do a hard reset, the settings will all be lost. However, if I change the TCP settings, and before doing a hard reset I try running VeriChat (or I would assume any program which uses the TCP connection), then if I do a hard reset those settings will be retained. But what you say is true.....there is no need to do the reset. I didn't even have to power off. I just changed the settings and opened VeriChat and it worked.

Yep, it now works. I just hope I am not charged for the extra data. The Cingular rep who added the line items to my account seemed to think I would be charged. We'll see.
