Calendar Sync: Date range

If I want to keep calendar items 3 years ahead (future meetings) and 3 years behind, I can put that in the date range (lets say October 7, 2006 to October 7, 2012 for today). Then if I sync again in November, will October 2006 be gone on BOTH handheld AND Outlook? If I enter data ONLY in the handheld, and sync ONE way to Desktop, does it change anything about this? Thanks.
