Hey guys, I recently got a replacement 7290 from Cingular. I had an AT&T model that wasnt working well. I have updated to all the latest software and I have noticed that when dialing from the phone screen I can no longer dial by alphabet. I used to be able to scroll off the dial line and type a letter and it would list my contact list for me to dial. Now when I scroll down and dial a letter that has a number the number is inserted and if I dial letter without a number nothing happens. Is there an option to turn this on and off or is this some sort of upgraded feature? Kind of pain as that is how I always dial and now I have to scroll down or dial from my contact list. Let me know if there is anything I can do. I tried to roll back to an older software version but it is still doing the same thing.

Dialing by name went away with v4.1 of the handheld OS.
You must scroll to the top and click the trackwheel twice to dial by name.

On newer BBs (those with dedicated phone function keys) pressing the "green" key brings up the address book and then you can dial by name.

Sounds weird I have a 7290 it doesn't happen to me...have u tried doing a reset? You should probably call cingular and tell them the issue it might just be a messed up phone

This is how 4.1 works. There's nothing Cingular can do on their end. The phone isn't messed up. You're definitely not on OS 4.1 which is why you can dial by name. You can verify this by going to Options->About.

I had the same experienced. Send an e-mail to RIM with no good answer. On the 7290, here is the best you can do. In the phone mode, go to the # line (instead of the phone log). Click the track wheel twice quickly and start typing the name. The double click brings up the address book. OK it's not a great solution but it's better than nothing. ***** to RIM and maybe they'll change it.
