Im setting up a new BES 4 server. I have put Windows 2003 on the server but we are running Exchange 2000 not 2003, will this config work ok ?

I couldn't make it work like that. BES4 needs the Exchange 2000 admin tools installed, and I couldn't make them install on Windows 2003

Ended up rebuilding the BES server to Windows 2000 to get it to work

merlin is correct. exchange 2000 requires windows 2000 server. since you will be using the same versions of mapi32.dll and cdo.dll as those of your exchange 2000 environment, and the fact that you will need to install the exchange 2000 admin tools as well, then you will be forced to use windows 2000.

That's not true. My BES is running on Windows Server 2003 with Exchange 2000 running on a 2000 Server. Everything is good here. I don't know if it's supported or not, but it works great.

i have mine running on a 2003 server as well. the only time i see a problem is when an exchange server is rebooted. sometime a couple of the users will not connect to the server. a quick reboot fixes it though.

Default Exchange 2000 will not run on Windows Server 2003

Please - this is not a BES thing - Go look it up at a MS website. Exchange 2000 will not run on a Windows Server 2003 machine. Has nothing to do with BES. Exchange 2003 will run on a Windows 2000 Server but not the other way 'round. --> http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=321648 You Cannot Install Exchange 2000 on a Computer That Is Running Windows Server 2003 <--

That's not the issue. nobla wants to run BES 4.0 on a Windows Server 2003 box, while he's running Exchange 2000 on a 2000 server box. Merlin was correct in that the Exchange 2000 admin tools won't install on 2003, but apparently BES doesn't care what version of the tools you have. I have the tools for Exchange 2003 installed on my BES and it's running fine.

You dont really need the exchange tools on the BES server. You simply just need to make sure a) the BESAdmin user has sufficient privileges on the Exchange server and b) the cdo.dll version is correct for the Exchange/Outlook combination you are running.
