Tastic,
The BlackBerry.alx inside the O2 OS Release (or any other BB release) generally has themes for a variety of carriers, locked to the carrier's ID. (T-Mobile is 100). If you tweak the .alx file, you can modify which themes get installed to the device.
So, for example, my 8300 is O2 branded. I believe the carrier code is 115 (though don't quote me, I haven't poked around enough to remember it). All I do is open the BlackBerry.alx file, find the XML property tags for the T-Mobile theme (which is actually 3 modules -- the Zen theme, the myFaves 5-click thing, some icons, etc.) and change it from 100 (T-Mobile's ID) to 115, or, separate them with a pipe (100|115).
The carrier ID (afaik) is burned into the devices' ROM, and can't be reflashed (though I'm not sure what happens if it is unlocked.) What this essentially does is trick the OS into using other themes by "allowing" them on other carrier IDs. You can also remove the carrier ID completely (like the 3 default themes) and it will still work.
Save the file, and then launch Desktop Manager. The software will detect a change, and will copy the theme files to the handset.
