Afaik, AIM does use SMS. Don't think there's any app that doesn't use SMS.

The IM apps on the Curve are no longer SMS based. They use data. This means that IM messages will not count as text messages.

I would say JiveTalk is the standard for all the messaging features it gives you. Well worth the money if you really need AIM on your phone. Or you can just convert your friends over to blackberry or Gtalk. I looooove Gtalk.
