Default Blackberry Address Book & Customizing Syncing in Notes

Please Login to Remove!

We have a situation at my company where we are having some issues with syncing options/customizations and Lotus Notes.

We are on a centralized address book for the company, and each staff with a blackberry has a separate address book that just pulls down their addresses from the centralized system to their individual copy of the book, which is then used by BES 4.0 to pull down wirelessly to the blackberries.

Everything works great, except these two issues:
1. We would like to NOT allow users to delete contacts off of their address book which then delete it from our centralized address book as well when it replicates. We would like it to recreate it on their blackberry at some later date if they attempt to delete a contact.
2. Even more important, when an employee creates a contact on their blackberry, it does not sync back up to the address book and we must have this capability.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how we can make this happen given the two issues above?

For the address book, sounds like you want to make it read only...

Try changing the sync type from bidirectional to "server to handheld", then for conflicts, "server wins".

Also... doesn't notes have the "lookup" feature for looking up addresses from a global address book?

We've thought about that and could to the push only -- but then we lose the capability to have employees edit their contacts on their blackberry which could then sync up to the server. Also that would eliminate any chance of new addresses on the blackberry making it up to the central server.

We can possibly live with the delete issue, but when staff create new contacts on the blackberry we have to get those new contacts onto the server, which currently isn't working.

Notes does have a lookup feature but I don't see how how that comes into play in this situation.

Sounds like you want a shared address book that accepts and push down changes too all registered devices..

IE:

User A adds a contact John Smith
John Smith is synced to the master address book
Users B, C and D now get John Smith on their addy book.

And if user B makes a change to John Smith, it will filter down appropriately to the rest of the users' devices as well

Right?

You got it. We have security in the mix too (not all users have access to edit all contacts) but that part is all handled in Notes and is currently working.

Basically the reason we need this is because we have executives that add 50+ contacts on a business trip to their address book on their blackberry... then they want that to push up to the master contact list without any additional work. Problem is that if it doesn't already exist in the master address book it never makes it up there from the blackberry.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for your time and help.

Try setting the ACL of their Address Books by removing the Delete Document Rights for the specific user

We will give that a shot.

Any suggestions how to solve the bigger issue, which is getting new contacts from the blackberry back up to the address book?

I'm just curious how this would need to be set up in order to work with your suggestion of iNotes. How could we get past all of the authentications and javascript errors, etc
