I have created a group that includes my 3 sons.One has a Blackberry, the remaining two don't.
I have added these two as text messaging BBM contacts and it all works fine. However, when I send them an email asking them to be part of my group, the email is never delivered (actually it doesn't even get sent and is not listed in the "sent emails" list).
Which brings me to my question: do group members have to be BB owners and therefore have a PIN ??

Yes, BBM is BlackBerry-only. Contacts must have PINs to become BBM contacts.
