In moving from iPhone to BB (see my other post below), I now have a choice. My daughter, because she often travels on business to Europe, has the 8830, which seems to me a good phone for my needs, as well. Then there's the Curve. I have to be on Verizon, as I'm in a pretty dead AT&T zone (hence the dumping of the iPhone), so I'm limited in choice of handsets. My main need is to be able to access emails, and to sync to my MacBook at home.
Are there are any BBs that pick up Wifi signals like an iPhone? Or is the system as it stands fast enough that emails zip through and webpages open as quickly as they do when you're linked to Wifi?
Also--a beginner's question--I know that when you're on your BB you're linked to your server's towers. But what role does Rim play in all this? They don't have cell towers or the like, so what purpose does the company play in terms of how your phone runs on a daily basis?
Have you looked at T-Mobile? They have a Curve (8320) that supports WiFi. Best of all, you can make calls with your T-Mo Curve over your WiFi network - in case you don't get good reception at home.
As bad as my AT&T coverage is here, T-Mobile would be even worse. It looks like Verizon or nothing. And I say that with sadness, since I think the first iteration of the iPhone, at least, is remarkable. My guess is that not-very-well-received 3G version will sink quickly, and a new, better one, will come out within the year.
Just curious as to where you are located with AT&T being poor coverage. I used to be in an area w/ poor AT&T coverage, but now both AT&T & Verizon are pretty comp.
