Most of the ATT employees I have talked to say they are lucky to get a 30 minute orientation on a new Blackberry or other phone the morning it is released. I have watched a sales person fumble and not even know how to remove the battery cover to insert the battery!
^ that's dealers and in store employees, I believe that article is talking about the BB tech support at the call center. They get extensive training on every phone released.
No the employee trainings are usually 3 hour training on all current blackberrys. If they can't figure out they didn't pay attention. The article is talking about RIM conducted trainings.
What is there to train on? I am going into my local store and demanding a Bold. They will activate the phone (while wearing white cotton gloves), then I will pay, and they will be forced to watch me do what I am calling the "I have a Bold" dance.
i hope other carriers follow suit on the trainning, i often hear Orange UK reps shit themselves, when you start the "I've got a blackberry, and i need some help with" rap...
I never even allow them to take my new phone out of the box. I make sure the box is sealed. They can get any info off the outside of the box. I take it home or to the office to activate.

RIM is ramping up their UK and South American trainings. It will take some time, and the carriers request the training (though RIM pays for it) so its gonna be a while.

you should ALWAYS have them power on the device at the very least. I would hate to get a defective 9000 the day of launch and have to go back when they dont have any in stock.
