If you are OK with giving up dialing from the home screen you can turn that off and then use the shortcut key, "K". Press and hold and the screen will lock.

1. Open Call Log
2. Press menu key and select options
3. Click on General Options
4. Scroll down and click on Dial from Home Screen
5. Change the option to NO
6. Press back key and save changes.

Now all you have to do is be at any home screen, depending on the theme you are using, press and hold the "K" key and the screen will lock.

You can also map this to one of your convenience keys. I have mine mapped to the left side key since I very rarely use the camera (Mostly because it takes such crap pictures).

1. Click on Options
2. Scroll down and select Screen / Keyboard
3. Scroll down to Right Side / Left Side Convenience Key Opens:
4. Choose which key you want to re-map
5. Click on the option you want to change and scroll down through the list
6. Click on Keyboard Lock
7 Press back key and save changes

Now when you press the convenience key it will lock your screen.

I just did this with my 8310. Now i just press "k" to lock the keyboard. I used to use the "mute" on top to put the phone in standby. Just be careful to hit the "k" key lightly. If you have "k" as a speed dial, as I have, you can use both. Hit "k" quickly for keyboard lock and hold it down to speed dial, in my case, my son-in-law.

All those suggestions are great unless you want to lock the keyboard while listening to the mp3 player.

This is when the right convenience key becomes convenient to lock the keyboard.

All keys are locked but the two volume buttons and the mute button.

PS: And as questioned above...what is the language shortcut for anyway?
