Metro Usage
I see people using Verizon phones all the time. My Nextel BB gets signal at a couple stops (I think Bethesda is one of them) on the Red Line, though it doesn't last long. It never worked on the Blue, Green, or Yellow lines.

Verizon wireless has an exclusive deal with the DC Metro for wireless service in the underground tunnels.
SprintPCS roams on verizon wireless in the tunnels. The other carriers are spotty at best.

I WISH cell phones would work on the subway's here in Toronto. You have like two minutes once the subway gets outside - it's a funny sight, because absolutely everyone pulls out their cell phone the second you are outside.

Geekman is correct. Having worked for the DC METRO (and in the tunnels too) it is all VERIZON. It's funny to ride and be on the phone. You can see who is - and who isn't - a VERIZON customer. Those that are not, always are losing the calls and getting frustrated as the trains go into the tunnels.

But if you are most interested in having voice service in the Metro tunnels, you can also get Sprint and roam on Verizon (either at no additional charge, or for a $5/month charge, depending on the plan). That's why I have a Cingular BB, but I keep my voice service on Sprint.

Yeah, looks like I'm stuck on Verizon for BB service in the tunnels.

I was in DC in May, and my Cingular Blackberry never worked in the tunnels. Once I went down the escalator, I had No Service.

T-Mobile doesn't work in the tunnels, but in some stations it does work.

Nextel is decent on the orange line, probably because their HQ is out here.
Still can't compare to Verizon, but screw Verizon.

I heard somewhere that the exclusive rigths contract is up this year or soon in too 2006. I used to live out in Fairfax as well and go better service along the orange line. I live now right next to a red line station and its very spotty. btw i use Nextel
