Data recovery after Device Error 365

Story: Device suddenly froze. Restarted by pulling the battery. Was ok then froze again. Managed to re-start a few times the same way; sometimes it would freeze, sometimes it would re-set. Eventually all I could get it to do when putting the battery back in was "Device Error 365".
Apparently this is an initialization sequence error. Can't connect to Desktop Manager to do backup. My carrier's tech support says next step is to try to re-load the OS through Application Loader.
My goal is to recover my data : contacts, notes, and passwords (in order of importance). They've never been backed up because I am an idiot (I know).
1) Anyone else dealt with this before?
2) Will loading the software (OS and JVM) through Apploader erase all my data?
3) Any option at all for data recovery?
For #3, is it possible for a tech savvy person to remove the device's "hard drive" and somehow get my data out? I'm willing to pay for this but don't even know where to start.
Any advice greatly, greatly appreciated.
