Default 8220 Pearl Outer Screen Question

Please Login to Remove!

I got a replacement outer screen ordered and received from CNN.cn (who i've been impressed with recently with regards to shipping) as the current one is tatty and scratched to blazes - this occured whilst i was using the phone without the OE BB Leather Pouch...

However i have not been able to figure out for the life of me how to take off the outer screen lens thingy, I can dismantle the lower half with the keypad/trackball etc no probs however i have not a clue how to go about taking apart the upper part of the phone... And CNN do not have a disassembly video yet (probably in the same ballpark as i am right now)

On another note, the build quality is laughable! No wonder its light - reminds me of the plastic used in a box of chocolates but that's another observation...

I don't see any kind of screws for the upper flip so my guess is that it pries apart like an ipod.

My guess (and I would steal your no good neighbor's/sibling's/whomever's to try on first) is that you may want to try using a pair of small flathead precision screw drivers and pry the silver rim gently from the black lens of the external screen.

**DISCLAIMER** The above is just a guess and I take no responsibility if you try it and you permanently damage your phone (or the one you stole to try on).

That's what i had thought as the replacement lens doesn't have any locating lugs sticking out anywhere...

I got the triangles-shaped case pry-opener tool that folks get for prying off the silver bezel on the Bold so i'll give that a go when i get home

Will take a video of it if possible

My 8220 has crashed to the ground. It has hit the ground with the front of its outer lens. Since this crash the sound is jangling in calls. I suppose the speaker is detached a bit. I want to disassemble the phone and check this.

Did you manage to replace the outer flip already?

Hi there yes i did and BUGGAR me sideways this is a bloody pain in the ass!

Firstly in order to remove the LCD outer panel you will need a heat gun or hairdryer to remove it because it is sandwiched on top of the actual flip frame itself...

Then once the outer layer has been pried off (i just went in dumb-fisted at the expense of my outer flip case's state) then you have access to the LCD and subsequent frame.

I cannot emphasize enough that you will need a heat gun to loosen the glue used to stick the outer panel to the flip frame

Hi TallPaul. Thanks for your hint!

I suppose I'll put up with the jangling sound. On my Flip the silver outer frame has been scratched also, and I've not found a replacement part yet. So the best idea might be to wait till this part is available (if this ever happens). But to change the whole frame will be even more complicated. Doubtful right now.

It's such a pity that my Flip has fallen to the ground. It's definitely the greatest phone I've ever had.

Did you have the chance to take pictures of the disassembly? Did you see where the speaker is located and how it has been fixed on the frame? Thanks.
