Default 8900 email issue

Please Login to Remove!

Hi, new to Blackberry, so bear with me, any helpful advice would be great.

I just got the Curve 8900 (Tmobile) branded, but the email set up icon is not available. Is this because I need either a data plan or Tmobile SIM?

I'm trying to use it in Asia with a local SIM.

Thanks

I suspect you just have it hidden, i wouldn't advise using the wizard setup on the device anyway. use the one that is available online. google tmobile instant email and it will come up for your region. make sure your device gets a data connection and that your SIM is correctly provisioned for a blackberry data plan. no data plan no emails and apps!

Is your device unlocked?

actually, no. I bought it "NEW - UNLOCKED" off ebay, but after checking, it is not unlocked.

Is that the answer? Once I get it unlocked, the email icon will appear?

If a device is locked, you wouldn't be able to insert any other sim card in it, especially if you intend to use it here in Asia. Setting up your email using a foreign sim card + bb data plan would then be made possible.

The email icon will not appear without a blackberry data plan since the built in push email only works through the RIM servers.

Hi Everyone, thanks for your help. I just got it unlocked. And my local SIM works (currently in China) for voice. But just as everyone has said, the email function is not available.

Do I need an actual Blackberry data plan for it to work? I always assumed that any data plan would allow email to work, just like a computer or maybe iphone also? Get connected to data, and the email app will work. Too naive of me to think that?

If there is no workaround, then I would need a local BB specific data plan to go with my local SIM?

That is correct. It would need to be specific to BlackBerry.
