Ok, I'm happy to report that I switched back to the old BBM. I have a Bold that came with BBM 4.7. The reason I didn't like the new one, 5.0, was because when someone sent me an image I had to "accept" it and save it in order to view it, there is no "view" option with the 5.0. And if the image waits for your accepting more than 2 minutes it "expires." That's frustrating. I hope Blackberry will fix this problem, until then I'm happy with BBM 4.7.
I have a Mac computer. So if anyone has questions with that I'll be more than happy to share my experience how I used Blackberry DM for Mac for that.
On a side note (for me at least, for some it may be a major concern), voicenotes sent to me on the 5.0, or sent from 5.0 to me, was NEVER received! One time I did manage to download a voicenote but it got lost somewhere, I couldn't find it.

Not sure I understand the question. Are you asking if you get the BBM 5 only if you upgrade your OS? If so then the answer is no, you can download it at http://www.blackberry.com/messenger from your device browser.
If you're asking where can you get the BlackBerry OS 5, then you can get it at My Report On The BlackBerry Bold OS 5.0 « Kirrin Jones at the bottom of the article.

In spite of this, which I'm confident will be soon resolved (and irritates me), I absolutely love the new BBM.
I find it outstanding.... I was content with the Beta that I've used for more than two months, and was thrilled to get the real thing...

Hate it - prob going back
BB user since there was a BB....
What I do like:
1. New UI
2. Ability to quickly update custom status
3. Ability to show avatar and easily change
What I DO NOT like:
1. Sending pictures stinks. I liked it much better when you could view a sent picture without having to save it. Used to be one of the great features of BBM. It was such a quick way to send a pic
2. Removal of location based services - best thing about updating BBM
3. Can no longer see if contacts are available at a quick glance
I'm sure there are more points on both sides, but the picture thing is huge to me. Come on RIM! If you're going to update one of the best things about the BB, you have to do it right!!!

The OS that you have installed on your BB is what would have the information as you would have installed it on your computer to do your OS upgrade. If you have never done an OS upgrade, then you either have to (1) download and install the OS that you currently have on your device, or (2) download the latest OS for your device and then upgrade your phone OS, and either way you should be able to get the BBM that comes with that OS.

Shmulik, I have a Bold and my BBM5 was working terribly. I backed up my contact list and then deleted the BBM from my applications, and now want the older version back but I don't know how to get it. I also have a Mac, and when I connect my BlackbBerry to the computer with the USB I can't really see any documents, only a bunch of Folders with nothing inside! Please tell me how you managed to downgrade, I would reeeallly really appreciate it!
Thanks in advance

Hi Everyone, I had 4.6 OS and I just downloaded the 5.0.0.411. When I did that, my Visual voicemail disappeared. Does anyone know how I can get it back? I tried calling ATt and blackberry and they are saying I would have to go back to the official 4.6 version in order to use VSM again? does anyone know how I can get around this? The OS 5.0.0.411 is working fine other than this problem I am having.
Thanks!

1. back up your files. (which apparently you didn't do..)
2. plug your phone to the computer via the USB
3. Start DM.
4. DOWNGRADE your OS (and this should also have the option of downgrading your BBM)
5. let the computer do the needful
6. restore your files
7. and voila you have your BBM back.
