Default Checking email

This is my first smartphone so please don't be too hard on me if this is a stupid question. I have my email account set up on my phone - Torch. The data plan I got was the 250mb plan so I want to use it sparingly. Does my phone use this data when it notifies me that I have a new email when not using WiFi? If so, is there a way that I can set my phone so that it does not automatically notifiy me when I get an email and so that I can manually check my emails when I want to or when I'm able to use WiFi?

Generally email is not the big hog unless you have large attachments all the time. Internet use for social networks and other such applications can eat away at the 250 plan. ATT has a web site that will give you the usage and you can see how much is used on different things you do. It also tracks the minutes and texting usage.
