First question: Do you have the device properly activated on Orange? Do you have the BB data plan? Are you in an area with a good signal?
Second question: For email you need the BB data plan. And from our FAQ:

I do not recommend using the carrier email address for these 3 reasons:
1. It is totally unfiltered so if it gets "harvested", you will get more SPAM than you care to ever receive.
2. You cannot take it with you when and if you change carriers. Once you delete your BIS account, it is gone.
3. The only way to read email to that account is on the BB itself. There is no webmail or PC client option. In the case of a data outage, you cannot send or receive.
