BB 9900 poor battery life
Please Login to Remove!
I recently upgraded from a BB 9700 to a BB 9900, and the battery life on the 9900 is very short. Yes I know it's doing more things than the 9700, but still...
My O/S out of the box is v. 7.1.0.284. I see that there are several updates available. Could someone recommend a version that significantly extends the battery life?
Thanks -

Re: BB 9900 poor battery life
Define "very short". Exactly how long of battery life are you seeing?

Re: BB 9900 poor battery life
As M-M asked, how short is short? How do you use the device? have you let the battery run down past 20% on a regular basis? That can damage the Lithium battery.

Re: BB 9900 poor battery life
Normally I run no apps - just a few phone calls, emails, Organizer. I would say that a charge on the 9900 lasts about 10 hours - and that still leaves me with 20%. From what I read maybe that's the best I can hope for with the 9900, and I guess I can get used to it.
My dissatisfaction comes from the fact that my BB 9700 used to go 3 days without a charge.
Since there's no O/S update that will get me an improvement, I'll leave it at that.
Thanks everyone for your input.

Re: BB 9900 poor battery life
I think you are doing ok with the 9900 if you can make it through the day without having to charge or swap out the battery while using the device the way you need. Charging every night when you sleep would be better, anyway, regardless how long the battery would go otherwise. If you change your habits and need more and can't charge during the day, a spare battery is the way to go.
And I agree you wont find an OS that significantly increases battery life.

Re: BB 9900 poor battery life
Lithium batteries seem to work best if they are kept "topped off" meaning plug it in anytime you are near a charger. And don't let it get below 20% on a regular basis.

Seidio offers extended batteries. SEIDIO | Innocell Super Extended Life Battery for BlackBerry Bold 9900 That one is more than DOUBLE the standard battery. On the downside, you need to use a hump-back battery cover. And it's $70.

Re: BB 9900 poor battery life
There are definitely some things you can do to improve battery life. Read the FAQ that Dubdub posted to you. It has some very helpful suggestions.

Re: BB 9900 poor battery life
.284 was a poor release for battery life. I had it on my T-mo and my Bell 9900, which both suffered from it. Most releases after .284 were much better for battery.
Then, lower your backlight to 10% and turn the Auto dimming feature on, with a 10-seconds backlight timeout. Turn off ALL auto updating programs and install the latest firmware release. The most recent releases have a feature that shuts down background apps. All of these things will reap big rewards in terms of battery life.

I found turning off the applications relying on the resident GPS increased the battery life significantly.

For me this isn't acceptable. If I would have known this I would have given up on blackberries and I'd had and loved them right from the start :(

Yep, where you gonna go.
Sadly, smartphones are now a commodity, and RIM is in the business. Price, quality, and sex apppeal are all that matter now.

I have a 9900 running 7.1 Bundle 2061 (v7.7.0.714.Platform 5.1.0.532) I charge it on a Sunday night, use it primarily for some Emails, BBM, Text, calendar (work appts) and calls each day and turn it off when at home after work so it is on for about 12hrs per day.
I am getting on average 4.5 days of battery life before getting down to 20% so I have no reason to complain.
I do not tend to browse via carrier and if at home and browsing, it uses WiFi.
I have read a number of posts that relate to differing lengths of battery life.
