No 3g no Wifi, then I wonder why they are even thinking of releasing it. it is not going to be anything more than an 8700 with cosmetic changes. In this case I would say no thank they can keep the 8800.

Sure makes you just want to skip the 8800 and wait for the 9xxx version.

I wonder if enabling wifi will be as easy as installing a different carrier's software? I doubt RIM is making a different unit with different internals just for Cingular. No, I'd imagine disabling wifi via software would be easiest.

Was it not planned from day-one to have one 8800 series model with WiFi and one 8800 series with camera released this year?

I think the information about 8800 having WiFi may have been wrong from the very beginning.

That sounds about right. Man I even started saving up for the 8800 I think I may be buying a wii now because my 8700 is perfect and all I was missing was wifi.

You hit the nail on the head. All just rumors built up to where many just accepted it had WiFi.
WiFi will not get my email quicker so I could careless. For those who want to cruz the internet on WiFi, there is a Windows phone for you!

Or a Nokia Symbian E62 - when you have to have WiFi.
Hype! Rumors! More hype!
When the 8800/8900/9000 functional specs are posted on the RIM web site, I will believe them.

This is a real let down. So besides slim form factor and expandable memory, there are NO updates from the 8700 to the 8800 correct? It's a shame that RIM is dropping the ball on us like this. With so many phones coming out with so many options, RIM once again gives us the most bland phone possible.
And still no word on a T-Mobile release?

Cruising the internet is not the main point of WiFi. T-Mobile has already announced their UMA service, where your cell phone connects via the internet when within range of a WiFi hotspot, gets 24/7 unlimited minutes when WiFi connected, and transfers seamlessly from a WiFi connection back to the cellular network mid-call. THAT'S the point of WiFi, and the final piece in getting rid of home phone totally and only using cell. I'm hoping Cingular announces a competitive capability by the time I can get a BlackBerry with WiFi, or I may consider a move to T-Mobile.

It's like the 8100 except for the full size keyboard and there's going to be two versions of the phone with a camera and one without a camera. The 8800 without a camera will come out first.

Good question since this is related to 8800. I guess there's another post in 8800 forum that talks about it.

No where does it say the 8800 series will not have wifi. I have discussed the 8800 with a couple of RIM reps. Unfortunately, I am under NDA and can not disclose the details of our discussion.

hmmm... interesting... if that's the case, the only thing I could think of why Cingular do not have WiFi on the phone is because they do not provide Hotspots like T-mobile does.
But than again, AT&T do have Hot Spots in limited areas and soon Cingular name will change to AT&T.
hmmm...
(Please don't ask about what's the deal between the name changes of AT&T and Cingular. It's too complicated to explain. If you need the answers, go to HowardForums: Your Mobile Phone Community & Resource )
