Default BB Modem Worked, Now It Doesn't

I think I was one of the first people to make the BB 7290 work as a modem on Cingular's network. I had it working well, and it connected successfully every time I tried. I had to turn in my laptop when I left a job, and I am having trouble setting up my new laptop to connect. I have followed the instructions in the thread (kind of funny that some of them are my instructions) to disable header compression and to connect to APN isp.cingular and username [email address]. I think I have repeated my earlier configuration exactly. Well, except for one thing. I was using Windows 2000. Now I am using Windows XP. I wonder if the problem could be related to my switch to XP.

Any thoughts?

Cingular may have started some form of port blocking --

However, since it was working on your other laptop and now it stopped working, this is a bit perplexing. Are you using password CINGULAR1 when it prompts you for the username/password?

Yes. Exact same settings as before.

I just went back through the HOWTO step by step on my desktop machine to see if I could set it up there. Doesn't work there either. I wonder if you're right about Cingular blocking ports. When I try to connect it does the "Verifying username..." thing and then says "Registering your computer on the network.". It eventually times out with a TCP/IP error 718.

Oh well. Was good while it lasted.

I am having the same problem. I just spoke with BB support at Cingular. For some reason the first week of January the three important line items: WIX EXT. INT. etc. were removed from my account. They said that they reinstated them now. I have to give it some time to see if it fixed the problem.

Great news! It works! I forgot one important detail. You have to manually configure DNS. Thanks to AuEngineer for that tidbit. I didn't remember doing it before. Here's a link to AuEngineer's instructions:

I've entered the DNS manually for the 8800 and still the same "Error 718". All of our Pearl's work but none of the 8800's.

Anyone have any other suggestions?
