Maybe think about allowing those that are regular posters (IE higher post count rewards for VALID posts), the ability to assign their own titles?

it takes a hack within phpBB to be able to do this (unless something has changed in later versions). there's already a few hacks, so it may not be much of an issue to add-on, but typically the reason not to add THAT many hacks is because you have to reapply them everytime you upgrade the forum software

This board wont be upgraded for a while, its a stable 2.0.9 and there are about 30 or so hacks in it that I REALLY dont feel like reinstalling.
