Cool Why are GPS programs dependent on cell supplier???

Please Login to Remove!

I don't understand why any GPS program (Telenav and others) requires specifying a cell supplier. I installed the AT&T version on my Rogers Curve 8310 and it seems to be working just fine.

Also, I don't understand why Telenav running on my 8310 takes longer to find a GPS signal than GPS's built in to vehicles. A friend has a new vehicle with a built in GPS and gets a signal in the garage 2 levels down. Yet, Telenav keeps saying that it can't get a GPS signal until I'm far away from the same office buildings (that the other GPS is under).

Just the way the GPS's can be.

I haven't figured out why they specify a cell provider either. All the versions work on all the BB's (pretty much.) I have the Rogers 5.1.0.74 on my TMobile Curve. I just search the providers until I find the version number I want.

Telenav is providing custom software to vendors; not necessarily in appearance, but features.

If you go to the Sprint store via your phone, and subscribe to Sprint's GPS navigation program, you get Telenav, it's just called something else.

The primary reason they want to know is probably money. If Telenav obtains a customer on say AT&T, then AT&T will be making $ each month of the subscription. They may pay Telenav part of that charge, as well as bonuses if certain subscriber levels are reached.

The "commissions" make sense... since they use tons of data, it forces people to be on the highest data plan. But why wouldn't it be available for all service providers? Right now, they don't show any Canadian ones for Telenav and others. They have a form to let you know when it's going to be available. Since it works regardless of service providers, wouldn't Telenav (and others) want the business?
