To say "most don't need" it is a lie. You surf from "hot spots" you need it. I say you need it ALL the time.
That was beyond negligent to say...

And if you are that concerned about your e-mail security, you should use BES.
Plain and simple.
Then you can sleep nights and not worry about Black Helicopters.
Unless you are, of course, in certain countries.

Just because you use Facebook and the like doesn't mean you don't want email security. They are 2 very different things...
The banking, credit cards come online now (if you so choose)... a lot of people might not want their work, i.e. BES to know certain things... thus they may be using BIS. Thus they would want SSL enablement.

I use BIS, not BES for my personal device because I don't want BES to "know certain things". Thus I could care less about SSL enablement.
It's not about some unknown person hacking my account and reading my personal lasagna recipe, I just choose to keep work and personal....separate.

Agreed.
Sandy, in all honesty, if you're that concerned about it, then get a device that suits your needs. As stated above, most users don't care about this. They're happy that they're getting their email on their phone. Is it an issue, yes. Can it be corrected, sure.
If you aren't happy and other phones have the security you need, then go get a Nokia, iPhone, or Android device. But remember, there are reports of people getting personal data from those devices without the access of email. Personal data such as credit card numbers and passwords. So these other devices may not be as secure as you think they are. Their hole may not be in email, but in the OS itself.

I don't think we can assume right now most users don't care since it was difficult to uncover...
And yes, other devices certainly have their "issues" as well. The BB was my preferred device even though I own other things. But not now... that is over until this is addressed. I have no mail through the BIS anymore.
Whether you care about SSL or not is not the issue - it's about the choice - or lack thereof on a BB.

I had a choice to use a BlackBerry and I chose to use it.
I also chose not to call RIM and ask them about security since, frankly, my EMAIL isn't guarding national secrets.
There was no 'lack thereof' on my part, there was 'I don't care'.

Why would I run your show? You're not on my BES (which is secure, by the way).
Are you?

What kind of "show" are you running?
Certainly not a corporation, or government or military enterprise. What show are you running?

I am just a "BIS" user - I am the consumer - trying to get my BB as secure as other smartphones I use but don't like as well.

So in conclusion, you're saying that no device is perfect, but you're expecting BlackBerry to be?
Do you go to Apple forums and post about the flaws of their OS and how easily iOS4 can be hacked?
Do you go to the Android forums and post how a Media player when downloaded sends expensive SMS messages in the background?

No device is perfect but BB (before this) did come close for me...
And yes, I have posted on other forums when a smartphone has completely let me down...
I would like to see RIM change this... without support though (and clearly I am not getting any) - it won't happen.
So RIM gets futher and further away from meeting "the consumers" needs. Sad really...

Voice your opinion there or RIM's official forum.

Oh, I have been there... they couldn't handle it.
I was hoping it would be better here (also, this is a more popular forum.) More "users" would get a heads up if posted here.
But it looks like it wasn't handled well over here either...
I am tyring t get the information into the right hands - using other methods.

The 'consumer' doesn't care.
The 'consumer' routinely access Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail and the like from their browser. They don't care about SSL. They cae about being able to send a recipe to aunt Sallie.
The average consumer doesn't run an email app on their smartpghone. They configure whatever is loaded on the phone.
BB is not for you.

Reading email from the web sucks. You either get the app that does that (only certain smartphones - and only certain apps) or you use the email client.
There are quie a few slams regarding the consumer here... why?
Not everybody that is under the consumer banner is stupid. I am a consumer... and I can safely say I have never emailed regarding "recipes" which has been referred to twice in this thread.
And whether the BB is right for me or not - is not up to you.

You're absolutely right. But going by what your concerns are, I think that it is a safe assumption that BB is not right for you when it comes to personal email.

You may be right - but I haven not "exhausted" everything yet. How to get around this - it could be possible. And no, not with exchange - I share my calendar/contacts so I am considered a "group" and am priced out.
Really... what I hope is they change this. I remember when AOL (only like a year or two ago) only offered no SSL enabled port (they were 110 and 25 - totally lame) for their IMAP through Outlook. Now they do, they saw the need and met it, and I have put them through Outlook... things in tech change, as we all know.
I am trying to figure out a workaround (and no that won't mean reading my email off the web browser.) I will bust my a** trying, because if I fail - I lose the BB. That's a big incentive to keep trying...
Never give up the ship - never give in and never back down. Trust me, if there is a way, I will find it.

This was no surprise to me, and it didn't cost me 50 bucks. RIM has not hidden anything. In addition what has been posted above, it's been reported multiple times in news articles recently: RIM does nothing to enhance the underlying security of emails on BIS.
Regarding SSL use on an email client, that is just between the client and the email server, right? My ISP's now enforce use of the secure ports on their users accessing the servers with a client, but how do I know the other party sending to me or receiving from me is using a client set to use secure ports? I don't know enough to even ask about the security of email traffic between mail servers. And I don't trust anyone else's computer, and almost don't trust mine sometimes. I just don't count on email being all that confidential.
For what I use the BlackBerry to do, it's fine. If I needed more, I'd look for ways to implement a PKI sort of deal, or hosted BES, or whatever, which I don't know for sure because I haven't had reason to look.
