I'm 100% convinced that this software update affects battery performance.

I don't believe that one os uses any more battery than another on a 8700. I think what people are mistaking for poor battery performance is actually a brand new os mated with a used battery. The os is not reading and displaying the battery level accurately. Several battery discharges and recharges should correct the problem. If you disagree, explain how two almost identical os's could cause such a dramatic difference in actual battery life. What would cause that?

i see what you're sayin but maybe the new antenna code is messed up and pumps the antenna harder than previous versions. I know the BB dynamically adjusts the output level of the antenna depending on distance from the tower so maybe that code is botched and the BB is keeping the antenna at full power the whole time, which would explain the shorter life.........

A bug in the OS can certainly affect battery life. Just one fat-fingered keystroke can cause the CPU to spin unnecessarily without apparent effect on functionality. Maybe it's in an API that doesn't get called very often, or it's in an API that's called by some applications and not others. Who knows, maybe it only happens to devices who's PIN numbers end in an even number. I've seen stranger.

I'm sorry, I'll ATTEMPT TO CLARIFY...

Sometimes, the very tiniest of bugs in an OS can affect performance without affecting functionality. For instance, a polling loop that's supposed to sleep for a millisecond but instead sleeps for only a microsecond. No change in functionality but a big change in CPU utilization. Maybe an OS bug was FIXED that software vendors were working around and now the workaround is causing excessive CPU utilization. Maybe the OS networking API is now returning a different or bad return code causing apps to retransmit mor often than necessary.

My point is that there are a whole slew of things that could have changed in the OS that could cause a battery to drain more quickly than before.

Well,

I've been using this version of the software now since it was released and I've also loaded bblight, bbreply and google maps for mobile. I see absolutely no difference in battery drain. I'm very happy with it and I can't for the life of me explain why some people would see no change in battery life and others are convinced battery life is reduced.

Thumbs up

I am also still getting very good battery life.
Close to when I bought my phone new.

Have no doubts that this OS does NOT affect battery performance negatively - on my phone.

I've upgraded last night to this OS using jibi's modified ALX and I can't get TCP/IP to work on my phone anymore. I've made sure the APN was entered correctly, resent service books, registered it, and powered it off and took out the battery. Anyone have any ideas as to why TCP would stop working? I'm on Cingular with a 8700c.

Never mind. Nice time for Cingular to have issues with our company account. I love coincidences.

my mother has been really complaining about her battery drain, but she does leave her bluetooth radio on all day long, so I think that could be the culprit for her...no?

Just to let everyone know, I found that the new .466 release for the 8700 is on the Vodafone UK site. It may not solve battery issues, but I assume (won't know for sure until I install it) that all of the Voda themes are included. I'm too much of a newbie to post the url, but it's here in this thread.

Update to last night's post -- Have installed Desktop Manager 4.2 and OS 4.1.0.466 (Voda UK) and everything works fine. Even the labeling of BIS email accounts on the Voda Today has been fixed. Harbinger of things to come -- in the vendor.xml file (which I did delete before sync) it appears that Voda will be offering OS 4.2 for the 8700 in the near future.

Is that version of Voda Today(in the UK version) later than the one in the latest Bharti? I know it says above that the Voda Today requires the older Voda theme. Just wondering , I gues I'm a bit confused as to which themes weren't included with the latest Bharti. I'm using Voda today(and love it!) with the latest Bharti, wondering if I should have used the Vodafone UK version instead?

If so could I just copy the cod file from one to the other and upgrade the theme?

Default It probably doesn't matter

In my inexpert opinion it shouldn't matter which vendor's package you use, as far as themes. Looking at the blackberry.aix file it seems that all of the theme files are the same. In the Voda package there are themes from all sorts of vendors including the new Verizon 8703e theme it shows in the ads. That leads me to assume that RIM supplies the theme files. I also assume that packages with the same version, like Bharti's and Voda's, will have identical versions of theme files.

You would be right on the button on that I think, from the bit of searching I did on OSs
available for the 3 currently available 'flavors' of the 87XXx

8700g:
Package Version: 4.1.0.466
Applications Version: 4.1.0.351
Software Platform: 2.0.0.143

8707g:
Package Version: 4.1.0.481
Applications Version: 4.1.0.355
Software Platform: 3.1.0.17

8703e:
Package Version: 4.1.0.493
Applications Version: 4.1.0.359
Software Platform: 2.2.0.166

FYI, Voda UK (and O2 Europe too) even has the 8100g OS available now:
8100g:
Package Version: 4.2.0.61
Applications Version: 4.2.0.51
Software Platform: 2.2.0.32
