8703e = CMDA/EVDO
8700c = GSM/EDGE
Different architecture; different phone. Give it a month or two and you'll have OS 4.2 in your hands.

Lets hope so. I stoped upgrading on the first Telestra.

NO!! You most certainly can NOT run this on your 8700c..It's a CDMA package, your phone is GSM...Two different technologies..

So, how would the 8703e package be (without the CDMA radio)
as against the 8707 package (without the UMTS radio)
on the 8700 in terms of functionality.
I know for sure 8707 applications (without the UMTS radio package)
run very well on the 8700.
As a fact, I am running it on my 8700g currently.
Has anyone actually been brave enough to load the 8703e OS on their 8700g yet?

It won't work...You might be able to edit the radio part of the package and add or remove the appropriate radio as needed.
You have an 8707 package running on your 8700g? interesting...8707 does provide for 3G, but the 8700g is not a 3G phone..
Not sure what the point is...

Here's an example of the 8703e OS on the 8700
Running only the parts relevant to the 8700's architecture.
ScreenCaps attached.
Intention being to utilize components of the latest 87XXx OS
-hoping they are advantageous, since RIM has seen fit to release it-
on my 'old' 8700, without replacing the phone itself.

well you can run 8707 OS on an 8700 and it works just fine, no issues with the UTMS Radio package at all, and you can also run the 8703 OS of your 8700 with no issues. i have the 8703 OS just as the poster above and i love it, its fast and as no bugs and there is no issue with the radio package. just because they are different i.e CDMA, EDGE, UTMS you can always edit the os to work with no issue...they are all 8700 at heart

it works ok but sometimes crashes/freezes and required alt-cap-del to reboot. also I get "Supplementary service error, unexpected data value" popups from time to time..................

I'm running on v4.1.0.359, the software from the CDMA 8703 (Sprint) - to be honest, it's the best I've seen so far. It's fast, not buggy at all, and just overall nice and smooth to run.

I too am running Sprint v4.1.0.359 on my 8700c, but I don't notice much difference from Vodafone UK v4.1.0.351. Oh well, one step closer to 4.2.

What I did was make sure you still have your previous working OS installed. For me it was the UK Vodafoe .351. Then download 8703e-v4.1.0.359_P2.2.0.166 and install it. Delete the vendor.xml file in the AppLoader folder. Then go to the shared/Loader Files folder and go into the 8703e folder and copy everything except the CDMA folder. Then take those files and java folder you just copied and paste it back into your original 8700 OS folder. It will ask you if you want to overwrite some files, click yes to all.
You should be able to fire up your desktop manager and it should work and ask you if you would like to upgrade. I did this using DM 4.2 on my 8700c. Let me know if you need any more help.

The VERY latest version would be the 4.1.0.359 version software for the 8703e CDMA handset; however, you can actually, with a little more work, get the 7100i (Sprint/Nextel) handheld OS as well (4.1.0.376).

A word of warning - though Cingular has an even newer version of the software available now (4.1.0.377) - I've noticed myself that there are some issues as per the backlight settings (goes off after about ten seconds despite the actual device settings) and for some handsets, may have issues with the actual themes and such after installing (display becomes garbled/messed up). Use caution no matter what OS you install on your handset, and of course, keep a backup of everything on the device on your computer, and also, if possible, keep a note of all the installed applications in case you need to hit it with the Javaloader USB wipe.
Oh, and another thing ... 100 GET!
