For me, having my BB 7290 locked to Cingular is no big deal. Paying $100 to get it unlocked isn't worth it. There are two characteristics that make it that way.

1. I hardly ever use the BB as a phone. I carry a separate cellular phone that came unlocked from Cingular -- really, it did.

2. I travel internationally only occasionally.

When I travel internationally (maybe once a year), I pay the extra $20/month to change from the Cingular domestic unlimited data plan to the international unlimited data plan. And I can get a local SIM card for the (already unlocked) phone to avoid the exorbitant international roaming voice rates that Cingular charges. So for about $20/year, I get what I want. Do I think I'll have the BB 7290 for five years to make unlocking it pay off? No.

I use my BB as a phone as well. From what I understand TMO will unlock it for you after being a "loyal" customer for a few months for free. So if that's the case I should be ok.

But, I belive NJ said he picked up a GSM phone that he only uses when he goes international. He just picks up a local SIM, uses the BB for email on his US SIM and uses the phone with the INT-Local SIM.

Maybe I can find a cheap one online some where so I can do that.

Who knows, I have a while to decide, just letting my excitement of travelling get to me. :D

8700r is for Rogers Wireless in Canada not Cingular or AT&T in the U.S.
