Can either 8700 model act as a modem for my laptop via usb or Bluetooth?

Yes, via USB only. See the detailed thread on the tethering.

Interesting, on BlackBerry.com it showed that only the 7130 had tethering capability.

Thumbs up Modem Speed

I have to confirm that the 8700g works great with T-Mobile/Edge as a modem for my XP Pro installation. Just follow the instructions given above.

Now I have a question. The Edge speed supposed to be in the range of 300k or even 700K speed range if I remember correctly. However, the speed I am reading when connected to the Internet shows 115.2K. I think that this is a limitation of the softmodem that the BB Desktop software (4.1) installs. In

My Computer -> Manage -> Device Manager -> Ports

you will see the RIM Virtual serial ports have a throughput limitations set to 115200 bps. That corresponds to the Standard Modem (through USB) that uses one of the ports and also maxes out at 115.2K.

I am wondering if there is a trick to increase the modem speed so that the limitation will be set by the available bandwidth and not through the modem?

THX,
Zoltan

I believe that the speeds you're referring to is more towards EVDO, which is actually faster than EDGE. Now, as a T-Mo 8700g owner myself, I'd love to get even 400K, but it doesnt work . I can still pull up CNN pretty quickly.

The speeds of 400-700k is more towards the evdo side of things. Regardless I just wanted t report that the PC is reporting 115k regardless of data connectiong type. I use my 8700 on tmo and my pc says 115k. I used my friends Moto Q with EVDO on my laptop and it still reports 115k although his connection is much faster.

IMO the 8700 as a modem has limited use. EVDO is needed for true tethering use.

When I tether my 8700g with EDGE, I'm not looking to play any network games, just do some simple browsing. It's always nice have things faster and faster but I'm happy with EDGE speeds while tethering.
