try rebooting your wireless router, that usually works. If that works for you, you may want to change the default wireless channel on your router to 1 or 11, these channels have the least interferance. one other thing i did was to assign my phone a static IP address. These two steps seemd to fix the inconsistencies connecting to my wireless network

Default Static IP?

I've been reading the forums for a while, but never posted before--I've seen several people suggest assigning a static IP to correct UMA problems. My primary issue is that my 8320 has started to drop calls switching from UMA to EDGE. There are occasional other weird glitches as well. Will a static IP help me, and if so, how do I do that?

For the record, I am in the legal field, and (thus?) somewhat technically/technologically ignorant.

Thanks!

How do you assign a static IP Address?

You set a static IP address on the router. Consult the user manual for information. Each router brand is different.

What? You set the static IP address for the BlackBerry ON THE BLACKBERRY. I have no idea what PhillyGuy is trying to do.

If you are getting dropped calls, I suggest you make sure you are running the latest version of the handheld OS for the 8320.

He's correct. Actually, you both are.
He's probably referring to setting a DHCP Static IP assignment.
Most DHCP servers can be configured to hand out the same IP address to the device based on its MAC address.

What you're suggesting is a manual Static IP address assignment. His suggestion is automatic.

I can see how new BB users would be able to do that...

Just because you don't know much about DHCP doesn't mean that everyone doesn't.
Maybe it's best not to stomp on someone as a first reaction, especially when you're not entirely sure what you're talking about.

Lighten up Francis; I actually know a bit about DHCP. My comment was that an average new user MAY NOT.

I simply clarified a point made by another member, and even credited you with an additionally correct response.
But let's be real... the snarkiness was started by you, in both of your previous replies.

There was no need for you to publically attempt to undermine Phillyguy's answer in such a way. Would it have killed you to simply offer up an alternate answer without the commentary on the previous one?

And then, after I explained the first answer, you get snippy with me. There's no need for that.
Why not just say "Thanks, now phillyguy's answer makes more sense" or something equally as benign. It was your first reaction to be the pessimist and point out the "wrong" side of the solution.

Honestly, I'm just here to help people and I normally don't take shots at mods, but it was clearly you that pissed in my corn flakes in this thread.

This is a direct quote:

"Just because you don't know much about DHCP doesn't mean that everyone doesn't."

You took the first shot - and incorrectly, I might add. Do you deny writing that?

That is what I reacted to - not the fact that someone made a suggestion on how to prevent UMA dropping calls.

"What? You set the static IP address for the BlackBerry ON THE BLACKBERRY. I have no idea what PhillyGuy is trying to do."

That was the first shot in this thread, and what prompted my response.
Do you deny writing that?

Nope - I wrote that. And PhillyGuys response will not help the problem. I know HOW to do what he suggested, not HOW it will help the problem.

Have you had any instances of UMA calls dropping when switching to EDGE?

I didn't take a shot at PhillyGuy - I took at shot at the suggestion. You, however, took a shot at me.

There is a difference.
