My vote is for "Blackberry Modem", and I also agree that a poll is still useful - if we can vote more than once.

Wow. There must be over 10 people in this thread that wants BlackberryModem (when including me and Guess)

Somebody needs to forward a hyperlink to this thread to RIM, to encourage them to add native modem support to BlackberryOS. We hit the motherlode. A whopping percentage of forum members on BlackberryClub.com wants BlackberryModem!

If the programmer who may do BlackberryModem, needs to do further market research for the viability of BlackberryModem, use the three search keywoards "Blackberry Modem Laptop" during Search RIMROAD and Search HowardForums.

If we really end up here with modem, I want to point out we concentrate on GPRS devices FIRST and newest Firmware ...

If it does end up as GPRS only you can count me out. But I'm guessing that one can make it universal by grabbing the packets[?] at the right point.

knoppi/stanton.

Probably, it really doesn't matter if it is GPRS and CDMA. The existing Treo600 modem software appears to works on both GPRS and CDMA. It just takes advantage of the TCP/IP stack at the software level.

BlackberryModem would take care of the Blackberry <-> Internet by using the existing software capabilities of the Java operating system (i.e. J2ME socket functions). Which means it would work if there was BES/MDS or there is a TCP/IP stack. It should be doable at the software level, routing TCP/IP and UDP packets. (ICMP routing isn't critical -- ignoring this usually simply means you're unpingable)

So if someone wrote BlackberryModem, it would not matter what kind of Internet connection the handheld device has, as long as all the Java socket programming works properly.

Do we know for sure with the modem software is even possible? I guess the more I think about it, the modem software would be great. I could use this on a daily basis.

Thanks

A simple GPS would be nice to have built in. Not sure if thats even possible with the hardware.

John read my mind. Among a list of other thing, I am wanting this too. I don't know how mapping would work; instead of downloading a small section of maps, like with the Palm, could/should the location be the input to a mapping web site? And I also want to (occasionally) let others see my location. Now, that makes BBModem sound like less trouble.
