I called data support yesterday, they say we will still have to go into a store and have the PRL flased on to our devices and they don't know when the stores will be ready for that. I called a couple of stores in the GTA yesterday, they had no idea.

Just as an update, Bell has released their v4.1.0.329 OS. (on the RIM site - can't post links yet, need a few more posts) However, apparently the EVDO PRL hasn't been released yet - and that's due out in the next couple weeks.

i'm in the process of updating the Sprint 4.1 OS i had on my bell 7250 to the actual bell 4.1 OS as i type this...

I've downloaded the new OS to my PC, but I have not yet upgraded my 7250...

Has anyone noticed any bugs with the new OS? I'm scared that I will regret upgrading if I encounter issues with the new OS...those of you who have upgraded, any issues?

Does anyone know what other improvements 4.1 has vs 4.0? Besides the future EVDO capability?

Now that I have run with 4.1 for a little while, I notice a few nice improvements: (some of these may have previously been mentioned)

-neat Bell theme
-easier to use calculator
-autocomplete for composing emails
-added "Echo control" for Bluetooth devices
-address book integration for Bluetooth handsfree devices

If anyone knows of any other imnprovements, please post them!

I upgraded to 4.1 and like the interface but see the hour glass more often than I used to.

I think I remember people mentioning that we need to bring our units to Bell to do the flash upgrade. Does anybody know how Bell does this? I mean, it would be a software connected to the blackberry via USB (guessing) so why couldn't we just do this ourselves?

Upgraded last week. No noticeable problem. Maybe... The emails filter was set to No although I leave it to Yes by default. Otherwise, seamless upgrade.

no problems here either... was runing the Telstra load earlier as well. I like the ring tone by caller id option - very cool.

Question Is the PRL user installable?

It seems May 5 is the latest date for the EVDO upgrade for the 7250.

Some posts in this thread state it must be installed at a Bell Store, others say it can be downloaded and installed by the user with Desktop Manager. Is anyone sure which is correct?

I am talking about the PRL upgrade from 30378 to 31012; not the OS upgrade which is user installable.

I have seen only one reference to a user downloading and installing the PRL update on their own. Based on the lack of description or follow-up I'm not convinced ...

Everything that Bell has published, both internally and externally, indicates that the software required to update the PRL will not be publicly available and that users will have to visit a store location to complete the upgrade.

Stores will be provided with a flashing “tool kit” which will contain:
- The 4.1 desktop software and flashing tool
- Step-by-step instructions on how to install and use the flashing tool
- A USB cable

Process in store? Store rep will need to:
1) Download and install the 4.1 desktop software
2) Download and install the flashing tool
3) Verify the customer has upgraded to 4.1
4) Flash the device (~30 seconds)
5) Re-program phone number
6) Update price plan or feature code
Since the phone has to be re-programmed, and feature codes/price plans need to be updated, it doesn't look like it will be a user installable upgrade.

In most cases there shouldn't be any cost for updating the price plan.

The assumption on Bell Mobility's side is that many EvDO upgrades will be performed with a tethered solution in mind and a higher tier RIM Data feature may be advisable.

You can look at it from both sides ...

On the one hand, given the choice, Bell Mobility would certainly rather collect $100 monthly as opposed to $60.

From a consumer perspective, however, if you will be using the tethered functionality regularly, the $100 plan can actually work out to be less expensive since tethered data usage on the $60 plan is charged at $6/MB. At that rate, downloading 7MB through your laptop would bump your data charges above the $100 mark.
