The difference is that 3rd party applications and your user data are not restored after a wipe. However, with the loader you can decide which 3rd party apps you want to keep and you can decide whether or not to backup/restore your data.

The wipe is NOT necessary.

I have had 190 running on my Bold without problems for more than 2 weeks. I have had my bold since the second day that it was available from Rogers and have updated the OS with most if not all official updates since that time. I am locked with Rogers. I did not have 185 on long enough to be able to say what the advantages of 190 are over 185.
I have had no problems in up grading. I have just followed the instructions at the top of this post.
I am on a BES and except for the update to 167 the re-initialization has been automatic over the air. With 167 I had to get a new authorization password and have the IT guy start the initialization of the BES files.
My observation with 185 and 190 is that they both use memory much more efficiently than .167.
I have no problems with my third party programs. The only anoyance is with the Beiks dictionary programs (I have 7 - most on the micro sd card) is that I have to re-enter my authorization code on an OS upgrade. In addition to the Beiks reader and dictionary programs, I have Beyond 411, Garmin Mobile (which is amazing), google maps, pocket day, sportsnet mobile, Viigo, Worldmate Live and Aces Blackjack, as well as the Blackberry Forum shortcut programs.
The only negative I have with this upgrade is that this tweek of the blackberry browser has rendered some radar maps on the Canadian government weather site unreadable. I used to be able to view in column mode now I cannot read at all. Also in Pocket Day, when I click to go to a particular RSS story to get the full story from the web page I get an error message in the browser and do not get to the web page.
I leave my Bold almost all the time on 3g as 99% of my time is spent in 3g coverage areas. Both 185 and 190 are very good at locking in the 3g signal if at all available.
One thing I noticed when in areas where 3g was not really available yet is that when on 2g - 3g mode, on both 185 and 190, it will grab and lock on to 3g if at all available, but that will take some time to pick up 2g when 3g is lost. This would no doubt result in dropped calls. I suspect that 185 and 190 are designed for where the 3g network is well deployed, such as Europe, and work less successfully in Canada and the US particulary where the 3g service is just rolling out.

I've had .190 installed for a week now with no problems. Boot time is much faster (about a minute and a half), OS is fast and stable. No problems with viewing thumbnails on media card or device. Third party apps work great. Battery life is excellent and for some strange reason, BT range seems to be better. I can walk further away from my BB before hearing static or being disconnected. Overall, this has been solid upgrade.

OK, with .210 I do see the thumbnails are working now... w00t! Also I'm not certain just yet but playing songs and skipping to the next song seems a bit faster. Still need to test Bluetooth headsets and in my car but everything else seems solid like .185 .

I too confirm that pictures in device memory now show up as thumbnail image... that's fixed. I also see that overall performance is a little snappier across most applications. Bluetooth in the car worked fine, though I really just made 2 calls, no lengthy testing done like address book xfer etc. A brief test of amAze GPS seems to indicate it worked fine and locked onto satellites quickly. No real issues at this time... looking good!

Welcome to the Forum.

I suggest you read this, quickly.

There are other threads here discussing Beta OSs. This thread is about and for release .190, let's keep it that way.

Do you lose all your 3rd party apps and settings when you upgrade firmware?

No, it's all backed up and restored during the normal process. However, if anything goes wrong during the process you will lose the 3rd party applications but you can manually restore your other data.

There is also a simple way to protect against such OS upgrade failure.

Before upgrading the OS, set up a "device switch" in the DM between two BBs, and go through /only/ the first part of the process, choosing /only/ to transfer 3rd part apps. Then, while the screen is still up, and without canceling or going to the next step of attaching another BB, which you aren't going to do anyway, find the PIN directory, usually under your "temp files" under your user name in "Documents and Settings," with the BB's PIN number. That directory will contain an alx file and all the cod files of your 3rd party programs. If you can't find the file, you may not have Windows set to see hidden files, and you will have to do that. Copy that directory to your main C: directory. Then you can cancel out of Device Switch, at which time the directory will be removed from the "temp files" but not from the C directory.

Then, if you need to restore the 3rd party apps after a failed OS upgrade, when you finally do succeed in upgrading the OS, go to "Add New Apps" and browse to the PIN subdirectory in C:/ and add that alx file.

I've tried to state this as clearly as possible, but if you can't find the PIN directory that is created, you'll have to search for it somehow.
