There is also a simple way to protect against such OS upgrade failure.
Before upgrading the OS, set up a "device switch" in the DM between two BBs, and go through /only/ the first part of the process, choosing /only/ to transfer 3rd part apps. Then, while the screen is still up, and without canceling or going to the next step of attaching another BB, which you aren't going to do anyway, find the PIN directory, usually under your "temp files" under your user name in "Documents and Settings," with the BB's PIN number. That directory will contain an alx file and all the cod files of your 3rd party programs. If you can't find the file, you may not have Windows set to see hidden files, and you will have to do that. Copy that directory to your main C: directory. Then you can cancel out of Device Switch, at which time the directory will be removed from the "temp files" but not from the C directory.
Then, if you need to restore the 3rd party apps after a failed OS upgrade, when you finally do succeed in upgrading the OS, go to "Add New Apps" and browse to the PIN subdirectory in C:/ and add that alx file.
I've tried to state this as clearly as possible, but if you can't find the PIN directory that is created, you'll have to search for it somehow.
