How can I make custom SMS Tones for contacts?
Please Login to Remove!
Heres what I want, I want a custom tone for certain contacts. When they call or send an SMS (regular text message) I want to hear the same custom ringtone for that person.
I just got the new Blackberry Pearl and am having a little trouble. Before I had the Moto Sliver, when I assigned a custom ringtone for a contact, when they called or sent me a text msg I would get that ringtone. Now that I have the Blackberry I have custom ringtones for people so when they call I hear it, but when they send me a text msg its the one set to the active profile. Now I tried the Exceptions and I can set custom ringtones that way but I can't get it to work for SMS. I even created a new profile and had the the same ringtone for Phone calls, sms, messages, e-mails then made an exception so when someone does call or sms it uses the profile I just created. It works for the incoming call but the sms tone is still the same as the active profile. How can I do this? Thanks for any help.

In my opinion, yes a POS. Out dated phones can assign custom sms tones. People text more now then they did then. When you have a lot of people sending you msgs, it helps to know who is sending the msg from the tone.

A little research *before* getting the device is always helpful in these matters....
Sounds like a sidekick or razr is in your future.... Good luck!

Just a thought...you could look at the message to see who sent it.
Actually, a program called Message Alerts found here:
WebMessenger Inc. - Message Alerts for Blackberry
It will allow you to set up all kinds of rules and alerts.

even though this thread is done, I still find it amazing that someone would return a powerful device for that insignificant reason. It wasn't meant to be!

Hard to believe, isnt it? The fact is though that the software I linked will give that functionality. Oh well, I hope he enjoys another razr...that way he can get the custom SMS tone but, uh, none of the other features that one would use a BlackBerry for.
Some people just want to use the phone, SMS and camera. If that's the case any BB is probably not for you.

I'm trying to imagine all the corporate users assigning different tones for emails sent from different people (most people get over 100 emails a day.)
Wouldn't that be awesome?

That's actually what made me stop using Message Alerts. Even with my SMS I couldn't keep track of all the tones I had assigned! I think the way it's set up works pretty well for me; I like having the different message types (email, PIN, SMS) set up as different tones, and if I have emails from certain contacts that need special attention I can assign them level 1 status. I realize this probably doesn't work for everyone but it does for me.

I don't think it's "insignificant" when many regular $30 cell phones can but this $200+ "smartphone" cannot. I love many things about my Pearl but I honestly think it's the worst in email than my Treo (or eww, sorry I'm saying it, Windows Mobile devices) since this BB doesn't know how to filter HTML code from emails so you get a "viewable" message, or actually display that html email - one or the other. But on the other hand I love the PIN emails and messages. But honestly I cannot say that my BB delivers emails to me that much faster than my Treo did on exchange servers.
Not trying to bash the BB but just saying something is "insignificant" to one person isn't for everyone. Perhaps that person relies on SMS and emails for work and we all know individualized ringtones are wonderful (it's not for me but they are still great to have as an option lol).

Some of that is definitely true. I know the 8100 has its shortcomings for sure. The thing that was interesting about the OP was that s/he called it a "POS" apparently just because of the lack of SMS ringtone options and wanted to return it. I just think it's a little funny.

You'd think if a particular feature was that critical that a person would confirm that the device could do what was desired before making a purchase...
