Looking at going S3 to 9930

It's been a long time since I've been on this board, I use to have a Pearl way back when, switched to a Iphone 3GS, and then switched to an S3.
In any case I don't like my S3. I just want a phone that works as a phone, doesn't drop a million calls (Iphone), I can easily type on (touch screens mostly suck for this), and doesn't break if I drop it from 3ft into a box of foam peanuts and pillows (S3 is a fragile flower). I don't ever play games on my phone and only do light web browsing, usually to find business hours quick need to know type stuff. Other than that standard text, email, google maps routing, and checkbook.
I'm thinking the 9930 would be a good phone and I have fond memories of my old Pearl... especially being able to type on it without looking drunk to the person receiving said text. I'm a bit put off though by seeing reports of bricking overnight while charging and such. Simply wondering if you all think this would be a good phone for my intended uses and have the issues with these phones been resolved?
