Default GMail App without BIS

Please Login to Remove!

hi there,

i am trying to figure out a way to install the GMail app without having a proper BB service plan and wondering if anyone can help-

i found an old thread (entitled 'Gmail app 1.5 out!) and have a vague idea of how to install it on my device via code or what not but the links are outdated and i can't figure out where to go for 2.0.7 which seems to be the newest?

also not entirely sure if i really understand properly, so perhaps i better explain-
have a regular data plan and when i go to m.google.com and download the GMail app, i feel like it detects that i'm on a BB and gives me the corresponding version which seems configured to look for BB servers, so when i start trying to run it, i get an error message that says 'tunnel failed' or something to that effect, can't connect and just stops.

would love a way to get around this if possible?

thank you!

p.s. am on OS 6

p.p.s. if there is a way, am also desperate for GoogleMaps...

"Tunnel Failed" sounds like it is trying to fall back to a direct TCP connection, but your APN parameters are not set in your phone's TCP options.

To to Settings / TCP Settings and enter your carrier's APN info, and see if that works.

The only way I know of to get gmail without a BB dataplan is to access it via the web at gmail.com. I think Google and RIM have an agreement in place, especially since gmail, Google Contacts and Google Calendar are part of BIS now.

will look for APN info and give that a try

if not, then will just have to get a BB plan at some point.

thanks for your help!

you may find the RIM/carrier and Google already thought of that and it wont work. If it did everybody would bypass the service costs. Not going to happen.
