Default Tethering for use as an Access point.

Please Login to Remove!

Hello, i'm looking for a way for my blackberry to act as a 3g modem and share internet connection vi wifi so that other devices can join.

In particular i want to be able to connect from my ipod touch Wirelessly to this network i would like to create from BB, since it supports 3g connections.

Is this at all possible?

Is this certain? IS there no way, or an app that somehow does this? How is it possible to be tethered and use internet on PC but not share internet connect for other devices?

For example on Series 60 there is an application that allows you to turn the mobile device into a wireless hotspot.

Nope.

Internet sharing by way of tethering is only available via the BlackBerry device's USB or Bluetooth connection to the other device. You can't share via WiFi. You're basically looking to turn the BlackBerry into a mini Hotpot. There's no support for this.

No such app exists in the BlackBerry realm.

You're looking for something like a MiFi 2200

I have heard of the mifi and a couple other products like this. Thing is i'm planning on buying a blackeberry as my professional mobile device of choice, due to the push email and data packet compressibility.

And along with this i would have liked it pretty much if could turn it into a hotspot so i can surf the internet with ipod touch.

Since I dont think there's a better way to view pages on the go than iphone/ipod touch.

BTW do you think that in the future there's a chance for ICS to become a feature of blackberrys?

You can probably tether a cheap win7 netbook to the BB and turn that into a WiFi hotspot.

Thing is i hoped there was a way so that a laptop netbook wasnt required. If i have to carry so many gadgets with me i wil be worthy of my weight in gold.

If only there was a way for the BB itself to act as an access point :(

Anyway thanx for making this clear to me.

There is a possibility that Cradlepoint has something that MIGHT work.

PHS300 Personal WiFi Hotspot | Cradlepoint Technology

They do claim it works with certain BlackBerry models. 9700 is not listed. My plan is to use this with a AT&T USBConnect Lightning and pull my sim from the 9700 to put into the USB stick. Will it work? Dunno. All the pieces are in transit as we speak.

If you do try it, make sure you have a tether plan as the data charges could be very high and accrue very quickly.

You mean instead of using a netbook for usb tethering you could use this device?

But how will we be certain with which devices it does work?

Very true unless you are on TMO which tethering is free and included. ATT and Verizon need to charge that extra amount to fuel thier 3G coverage map ad war on TV.

I currently use a Cradlepoint CTR350 and works like a charm. You connect your BB via USB and the rest is history. If you purchase one now, they even throw in a car charger for free upon registration of product.

The only phones that can currently do this via app are symbian phones. Actually works rather nicely.

I already know that, but i was hoping there was a solution for BB as well. I already emaild joikusoft and asked what their plans are for a BB released version.

Cradlepoint looks nice and portable like a 2.5" external hard drive, but still you got one extra thing you got to carry around with you so you can get the job done.

BTW any idea what the differences are between PHS300 and CTR350 models of Cradlepoint?

Be another week before I can say one way or another. FedEx didn't deliver before I left the country. Sigh. Not home for another 7 days. I'll try it both with the 9700 & the AT&T Lightening. I go the USB device as it supports the 7.2 and the 9700 only does the 3.6. But if it works with the 9700 tethered... that will be the simpler solution. I did find the Lightening did not work by just popping the sim from the 9700. The software with that device forces to ips.cingular for the APN. Will not let you change to wap.cingular. No luck getting the Lightening to work with the AT&T Global Connect client..... yet. ;)

This footnote appears under the supported devices section:

Blackberry Devices running the 5.0 Version of Blackberry Operating System are known to have problems connecting to CradlePoint routers. It is recommended that users wanting to connect or “tether” to a CradlePoint router with their Blackberry device use the 4.x or earlier Blackberry Operating Systems.

I did not see the 9000 or 9700 listed under the supported devices section. Nice product so i'd like to see if they offer support.

Hmmmm... I could have sworn we went through this a few weeks ago and it was confirmed the 9700 didn't do 7.2.
