Does anyone know if ATT has changed its policy yet and whether I can insure my Blackberry through them?

No, you can't. AT&T still does not offer insurance for smartphones and PDAs.

Search the forums or google. Plenty of carriers etc.

I just looked into this today.

Your homeowners will cover it, however if you have a deductible (and mine is $500)...it's a moot point.

I looked into private insurance, but what they do is just send you a "similar" phone. There is no guarantee you will get the same model or a NEW phone. They may send you a refurbished one. (at least that is what I saw from Wireless Safeguard Insurance for BlackBerry, Palm Treo, and other AT&T Cingular Devices )

If someone finds another company, I'd love to know.

Well, I have insurance through Verizon on my 8830, and from what I remember when I signed up for it, Verizon doesn't promise a new phone or even the same device, either. Meaning, I could easily (and probably) just get a refurbuished 8830 if something happens to mine (I think that this might be the case once I've had the phone for 3 months). Also, if Verizon stops offering the 8830 a year from now or something, I may not be able to get a 8830 if something should happen to mine (I am less sure about this last point than I am about the first). So, it sounds like the 3rd party insurance isn't that far off.

Asurion is known to insure electronics and BlackBerrys

I've never bought insurance on a phone, I just don't think it is smart use of my hard-earned money. It is different for health, home, auto or life insurance where you are protecting yourself, basically, from catastrophic events and other people.

Basically, the deductible on a BlackBerry is often as much as a new replacement unit (a year later, when the initial cost of the new BB is reduced).

That is the case with Verizon(Asurion), if they have refurbs, you will get a refurb. But the case with, if they dont have 8830s anymore, or dont carry them, then you will get a phone of equal or greater value. So if VZW gets a newer model blackberry you will be able to get that if the 8830 is no longer offered. But judging from how long VZW keeps their blackberry SKU's kicking around, this will most likely not happen.

Just called Asurion. They do not insure AT&T phones.

Any other private insurance out there for phones?

Most have quit as they found it to be unprofitable. As far as the one that you do find, few if any warranty you will get a new phone. Likely refurbished.

In the last few years, few offer insurance that has "real worth".

i have had good and bad experiences with asurion. But the bad was a long long time ago. They must be profitable, they have been around for a bit now. Not sure of any other companies that offer coverage, as I have only had asurion.

Also, not sure if this matters to anyone or is even relevant, but Asurion has a new underwriter, and its Liberty Mutual.
