Default Being charged for data usage when using wifi with network off

Please Login to Remove!

Hi, sorry if this has been asked before. I've had a little search but came up empty.

Basically, as the title says, when I use my 9800 to browse online I switch off my network (Vodafone uk) and enable wifi. However, my monthly bill over the last three months has been consistently £15-17 over the base charge of £20.

I've contacted Vodafone about this and they say I'm being charged for data usage. I say how can that be when I switch off the network for browsing just to make sure?
Btw, I started switching off the network after the first unexpected bill.
I've also set the handset to prompt me whenever it connects, but it doesn't ask my permission for anything strangely.

I didn't have this problem with my Nokia E63 which automatically used wifi ONLY (if available) and asked permission to connect.

Any ideas?

Depending on the App, some will not use WiFI and will use the cell data network.

The FAQ section offers some further info.

Hi, I'm just clicking on the network indicator on the home screen and unchecking 'mobile network' and then checking 'Wi-Fi'.
I'm then unable to make or recieve calls and the reception indicator changes from the usual 3G/GPRS/EDGE bar to the Wi-Fi signal strength icon.

My connection status shows that I'm using Wi-Fi.
As for the app, I'm just using the basic included browser.

Really, really baffled here...

Sounds like your doing everything so unless your missing something that is using data automatically like a GPS or APP that polls for messages when in cell mode you may need to challange the carriers statement and have them give you more detail.
With the Cell service off and only WiFI on you should not be charged.

Cheers, I'll have to get on to them again I guess... Just gets annoying as all they do is act like you're too dumb to figure out how to activate wifi lol.

I don't use any apps, nor do I have email set up as I got the phone from a friend after my ancient N73 crapped out and it's only got options for BB enterprise. I can't be bothered to sort that out though
Actually, come to think of it, that's why I don't use any apps..

In the meantime, if anyone has any ideas or had a similar experience I'd appreciate your input.

A little update for those who may have experienced the same problem>
Forgive me for not remembering all the technical details

After talking with Vodafone (with a clued up advisor this time), it turns out that even though I switched off the network to browse via my WiFi connection, when I switch the mobile network back on, it connects via GPRS (I think) to 'update' something or other, and charges for the data usage. Over the course of a month this adds up...

Vodafone were pretty good about it and waived the charges for this month, giving me a bill reduced from £37 to £7 with next month's bill at £34. As it should be around £20/month, it works out ok.

They've now disabled mobile internet on my phone which is fine by me as I only bother with it when I'm at home, using my own WiFi connection which should now be free (Technically, it always was but you know what I mean).

Hope this helps someone.

Sounds good just be sure they do not delete the service book that controls WIFI when they delete mobile internet. Without that at a minimum you will only have a cell phone.

check back if this works for you and post.

Yep, WiFi works just fine and now I can have it switched on at the same time as my network without worrying about being charged for data and missing calls while I'm browsing.
