Default Pearl: Pros & Cons

Please Login to Remove!

I know there's been a similar thread going around but I'd like to start a new one on PROS & CONS about our Pearls...

I got my Pearl about 3 weeks ago and to be honest I didn't like it at first. But than I started figuring out how stuff works, how to put Music/Video files on, how to use keyboard properly, and so far I wouldn't change for any other phone..I'm in love wit my Pearl

PROS:
-Music Files-I can listen to my favorite songs while workin out,
-Video Files-I only have 5 or 6 video files but I'm enjiying them all,
-2GB card-Is awesome, I can put lotta stuff that I need,
-Keyboard-Love to send really long SMS messages cause its addicting,
-Media Net-I'm surprised on how fast modem is...very fast,
-Brickbreaker-Decent game, I like how I can listen to my music files and still play Brickbreaker,
-Maps Feature- Is really cool, so I don't need to use mapquest anymore.

CONS:
-Vibrate With Tone-I missed many callls due to only Ringing or only Vibrating alert...I NEED BOTH, lol,
-Videos-I wish it's little bit easier to put up Video files on,
-VoiceRecorder-This feature I still havent mastered yet but it needs more than jus 1MIN of recording, by the way can you increase that limit?

Thats all I got on my mind for now...

There is a vibe and tone option.
Profiles->Advanced->highlight the profile you want to have vibe and tone and press the menu key->Edit->Select which notification you want to change->Change the Out of Holster setting to Vibrate+Tone. Then you can set the Tune and Number of Vibrations. I wouldn't set more than 2 or 3 vibrations because you run the risk of it vibrating for too long and you missing the call because the ring barely played.

I think he means that it doesn't vibrate and ring at the same time, it can only vibrate first, then ring.

Try Amazon. I'd recommend SanDisk.. It may cost a couple bucks more than EBay, but you know what you're getting and where it's coming from. I think I paid about $35 for a 2gb w/ shipping.

My only cons:

1) Lack of 3rd party Apps (but I can live without them for now) as compared to a WM device.
2) Not compatible with subscription music services.
3) BIS doesn't play well w/ MS Exchange 2007 (yet).

I'm tired of:
suretype (I realize it's a preference)
the small screen
How easily it picks up fingerprints and scratches

:p I ran a search after reading the OP topic.
downloaded and installed. working great. if i don't find a better free app, i think i might actually buy this. lol
but why do you guys keep saying theres a 1min limit? mine keeps going past 10min and then i stopped it. or did you mean the voice memo that came with the bb?

and to go with the OP topic:

PRO:
- lightweight (this can be a con too if you forget you have it..lol)
- LED notifier (i love not having to turn the screen on to see if i have new messages or anything)
- SureType

CON:
- lack of video recorder (i can't understand why they would market it to the general consumer as well, but not put a video cam on it. i know why its not on for the business end of it...but you get my gist.I'm having to use my Motorola A1200 2MP cam for videos until further notice...)
- 1.3MP cam (urgh, why? why?!)
- the virbation isn't as strong as my previous sony phones or motoMing. Sometimes miss calls and SMS'
- SureType (at times it is a lil frustrating...sometimes you want T9 back with 9 keys. lol)
- Installing Java apps *.jar/*.jad (Its not as simple as installing on other phones)

um, all i can think of for now...

Ha, you are expecting way to much my friend. 2MP and up camera phones are expensive. Would you want to pay close to $400 or so for the Pearl? I think not. Thats not really a con. And also, this camera on the Pearl is one of the best I've seen. So there!

PROS:
  1. The EDGE data feature. This is my first EDGE capable phone and its amazing.
  2. Very small compared to previous BB models. A Big +! (This is where the SURETYPE keyboard comes in very handy)
  3. Push Email Service. Nuff said!
  4. Quad Band-Very nice when traveling to France!
  5. Beautiful screen, even in daylight!
  6. Applications! GMAIL, OPERA, GOOGLE MAPS
  7. Themes, Very customizable.

The only cons I can think of would probably be speaker could be a little better, I think I blew mine already, sounds scratchy. Also, the flash could be better, but who needs a flash.

Other than that, the Pearl is emaculate and I think I won't switch phones for awhile. Good job picking this up TMO! Loving the white Pearl.

How is this thread different than the others that have floated around for the past few months?

Just wondering.

Hi Poco

What kind of attatchments are giving you problems? Opera Mini should not affect that, but not all attatchments are compatible with the BB.

My thoughts:

Pros:
It's a BlackBerry and it's a stable OS
Light in weight
Trackball tons better than thumbwheel (although there was a slight learning curve)
Custom ring tones
Camera and other multimedia functions
Bluetooth
Solid PIM functions easliy synchs with my Mac at home and Outlook at work
MicroSD card INSIDE the case (yep, that's right--used to hate the Treo's card would pop out all the time)

Cons:
SureType (I live with it but wish I had the full keyboard--the Curve may be the best of both worlds)
Sides too easily scratched
Speakerphone volume sucks
Earpiece volume sucks
MicroSD card location INSIDE the case.
