Default Trying to understand "unlocked"

Please Login to Remove!

Ok I am feeling rather dumb right now trying to figure out what it is to "unlock" my phone.
We are planning a vacation to New York this Summer, if I have my phone unlocked does it mean I can use it there without any extra charges? Does it mean I can use the phone as well as data or is it just for the data plan(to check email and facebook)

Thank you for helping me understand this!

Unlocked simply means that you can use a SIM from a different carrier in the phone. That means that you could get a pre-paid SIM from TMO or AT&T and use in your phone while here.

If you keep the Rogers SIM in the phone and use it in the US, you should expect whatever international charges Rogers levies upon your use, including for data.

ahh ok I get it now, thanks! I wonder how much a sim card would cost for me to use it for the 5 days we are there.

Remember that most prepaid SIM cards are voice/SMS only, and you won't get your e-mail.

A good thing to do is to get a cheap quad band GSM phone, unlocked, and get a local SIM card for that. When I travel I leave the BB alone, and use the local SIM card/phone for all calls.
